Xochimilco (Mexico City)

Xochimilco is one of the many neighborhoods in Mexico City, but it isn’t just any neighborhood, it’s one of the most fantastic places in Mexico City. It's a zone that maintains a lot of colorful, fantastic, and fun traditions. The most interesting thing about Xochimilco probably is the many water channels with houses, “chinampas” (chinampas are pieces of land that are put into a lake to get some more place to live in or plant crops.

Xochimilco is one of the many neighborhoods in Mexico City, but it isn’t just any neighborhood, it’s one of the most fantastic places in Mexico City. It’s a zone that maintains a lot of colorful, fantastic, and fun traditions. The most interesting thing about Xochimilco probably is the many water channels with houses, “chinampas” (chinampas are pieces of land that are put into a lake to get some more place to live in or plant crops.

Aztecs started this whole chinampa thing about 500 years ago), flowers, trees, of course water and lots of things alongside, it’s like the Mexican version of Venice. There are these amazingly colourful (and fairly big) boats called “trajineras”, they are rented by tourists to tour the channels, lakes and stuff. Local people are the ones that show you around, and tell you about the place (if you speak Spanish), they also sell traditional food, which I hear is delicious, and souvenirs and handmade stuff (little trajineras for example).

People from Xochimilco are really nice, at least the guy that showed me around was, he talked to us (I went with my family and a friend) about everything, the place, their culture, their food, their houses, his childhood anecdotes, and he even managed to save a little dog from drowning.

In Xochimilco people use everything, it’s a very ecological community, they make decorations for their boats out of dried straw and fallen trees, they reuse everything they can, they grow their own food and eat a lot of vegetables, and all of their organic rubbish is made into compost.

If you ever have the chance to come to Mexico try to visit Xochimilco, it’s really worth it.

Xochimilco was declared World Heritage in 1987 by UNESCO.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

A Salute to the Masters: Buraco (A Tribute to Alfred Eisenstaedt)

Alfred Eisenstaedt was one of Life Magazine's greatest photographers, known for his ability to immortalize the storytelling moment of many public events in history. To write this tribute to him, I chose a subject that he photographed in different places and times: card players in public places. The photos in this article were taken at the Patronal Feast of my city Como, during a series of buraco's lessons held by a local card players club.

Transient Living: Armitage & McMillan in Denver, Colorado

If you want to know the heart of a person, peek inside his/her wardrobe! And no, nobody famous said that; I only just made it up. But really, don't you think it's true? After all, the way we dress screams our personality; at least for most of us. And that is why, as soon as I land on a new city, one of the things I absolutely must do is find the local boutiques. Sure, I love the fancy chain boutiques as much as the next person, but there's just something else about a local clothing store. It's unique!
