How to Prevent Camera Neglect

6

To all avid lomographers - how many of you have a collection of cameras in your possession? And how many of you still have film inside a camera but cannot remember when and where was the last time you took that camera out? Keep reading for my tip on how to avoid camera neglect and prevent sending your film to the land of forgotten film!

Taken with a Lomography Fisheye – Gold Coast, Australia

I have a confession. I am guilty of camera neglect. Let’s be honest, although we should treat all our cameras with the same amount of love, there is always that one (or two) that we reach for, no matter what the occasion, weather or time. And since my purchase of the Diana F+ and her accessories, I find myself neglecting some of my other cameras and I often leave a half exposed roll of film in a camera and forget about it.

My latest discovery is finding a roll of film in my Lomography Fisheye and could not – for the life of me – remember when and where I last took this camera out. The results were shocking because the photos were back in 2010 when I took the camera with me on an overseas trip to Australia. It’s embarrassing to admit, that I had not touch my Fisheye for over two years.

This was the same with my Spinner 360 but this time, it was not as bad. Around six months rather than two years.

But I have found a way to stop this from ever happening again. I now, have an alternating camera schedule. Every month, I use two different cameras and I convince myself to stick to two cameras until the month ends. And so far, it’s working! I’ve brushed the layer of dust off my Supersampler and took it with me on my recent family road trip to Waihi and Te Aroha. The last time I used the camera was back in February 2010 and I had forgotten just how much fun it was to play with.

So here’s a question to all obsessive camera collectors out there (don’t deny it), what other tips can you recommend to prevent camera neglect?

The Diana F+ is a new twist on the ‘60s classic cult camera. Famous for its dreamy and soft-focused images, the Diana F+ is now packed with extra features such as panorama and pinhole capabilities. Available in our Online Shop.

I have too many cameras and try to rotate through them, presently it's Yashica microtec Zoom 70, next is Miranda D, then FED 5B, and so on. I might not live long enough.

I keep a photography journal were I log each roll of film I shoot with camera, locations, and notes. It helps me see how long it has been since I have used a camera. I can see the last time I used a type of film, too. I also put masking tape on my cameras with when I loaded a roll that way if I did not finish, I do not leave that camera sit for too long.

That's a great idea! I should really start a journal soon!

Pushing Boundaries: Multiple Exposing Film Soup

As you may have read in my previous article, I truly fell in love with Lomography when I combined my Fisheye camera with an old Canon AE-1 for magical photographic results. Last summer, I took so many pictures of flowers that it started to become almost boring for me. My waning interest and the coming winter meant that I had to figure out something else to do with my 35mm film.
