Walrus, seals and polar bears... no need to go to the Arctic to see them!
The Parc Aquarium de Quebec is situated at a half hour bike ride from the center of Quebec City, by the Saint Lawrence River. Firstly founded as a research center, nowadays its focus is more on to community education in aquatic ecology, meaning it is opened to visitors to see aquatic fauna and learn a bit more about its behavior. In 2009 is making its 50th anniversary. The price for a whole day visit is 15 Canadian dollars.
In its installations you can find walrus, seals and polar bears. In summer the polar bears are a bit pitiful, lying in the shadow without energy to move… Of course, you can find also fishes, mostly from boreal and Arctic environments. There are several activities scheduled through the day, among them the feeding of the walrus and polar bears as well as the training of the seals. There are several playgrounds for kids through the installations and also picnic spots, so you can bring your lunch from home. Also you can enjoy some ice-cream, which in summer days is mostly welcomed! And nonetheless, while walking through the park you can meet Paq, the mascot of the aquarium, a guy dressed in a huge walrus dress which deserves my admiration when he has to endure a whole summer day inside such a furry costume.
For this visit to the aquarium I loaded the holly LC-A mostly with negative film that was cross-processed in e6 giving some surreal tonalities to the photos. Also, one slide film was used, an elitechrome 100 that I rated as an iso 800 to shoot inside the main building of the Aquarium under low light. This one was push-processed three stops when developed, which gives some weird chemical feel to the shots.
So, you want more information on the park to plan a visit? Check the webpage: http://www.sepaq.com/paq/en/. I think I will have a second visit, it is fun to make photos in that place. Next time though, the visit will be in winter so I can see some more activity in the polar bear pit!
