About the Art: Custom Diana World Tour Clones Pt. 1

The Diana World Tour has come to America at last! As it travels from San Francisco to New York, each Gallery Store will show a unique assortment of Diana F+ cameras customized by local artists and designers; You may not get a chance to see the San Francisco Gallery Store's 2012 artist clones in person, but we want you to see them from home! Here's the first installment of this series, in which we show you a few pieces and let the artists talk about them.

We’ll start by looking at the piece from Grant Gilliland, a.k.a.the Gross Uncle; He’s a cartoonist and children’s book illustrator based in San Francisco.

What inspired you?

After a failed attempt to clone a living, breathing Diana camera monster, I decided to recreate the rare creature by making a 3D painted model instead. My experiments were closely monitored by a group of scientists with berets on.

Were there any challenges to this design?

There was the moderately distracting experience of having two dozen eyeballs staring back at me while I worked, but besides that it was a success. The Diana F+ was a perfect fit for the anatomy of the creature, which is commonly found in the Northwestern forest regions. Now, if I had been assigned to recreate it’s Southwestern relative, then I would have been in over my head.

What is your aesthetic as an artist / designer?

Well, probably the best way to describe what I came up with in the lab would be to share the formula that I use to feed the creature:

(Please ensure proper dosage and stirring speed to avoid spontaneous combustion!)

1/2 cup of powdered Nickelodeon from the 90’s
16 fl oz of Liquid Television (blended)
4 whole Sharpie markers
2 cups of Acrylic (watered down)
12 fl oz of ambition juice (coffee)

Carelessly mix all five ingredients in a bowl while watching cat videos on Youtube. Once stirred into a fine sauce, shut off laptop and Internet and pour mixture directly into eyes.

Kids, don’t try that at home.

Next up, artist Allen Passalaqua discusses the inspiration for his work. Allen is a professional comic color artist and has been commissioned to create artwork for several National Parks, the San Diego Zoo, Grand Canyon, and various Emmy-winning commercials. Allen is known in the comic book world for work on Justice Society of America, Batman Confidential, JLA Classified, Detective Comics and many more.

“Photography is an amazing artistic tool & resource to capture what’s happening in instant. It’s documented some of the most beautiful and amazing images of the last hundred plus years, and some of the most important as well. Whether capturing a beautiful sunset or historic event, as photographers we are exercising our First Amendment right to tell a story with images. In today’s society we are finding our right to take these pictures stopped by Corporations, overzealous security guards, and the very people that have taken an oath to protect our constitutional rights: our own government.

My piece is intended to make the viewer aware that photographers not only have a right to make images, but may have to fight for the rights that we already have today (and most certainly tomorrow). So please, go out and make beautiful images… and if someone tells you can’t take a picture? Know better, know your rights and fight for them before they are taken away."
