Take a Walk with Analogue Alberta: A Summary of Alberta’s First Lomo Meet in Sylvan Lake

4

On Saturday, April 28th, a keen group of lomographers from around Alberta converged on Sylvan Lake for the first ever Alberta Lomo Meet. Read about this event after the jump!

Sylvan Lake is a town, located in central Alberta, Canada and has a population of approximately 12,000. The lake itself is approximately 15 km in diameter.

This town was chosen as the destination for Analogue Alberta’s first Alberta Lomo Meet due to its central location and beautiful scenery. Although the day was bright and sunny, the lake itself was still frozen. Anyone who lives in Alberta wouldn’t be surprised that, even though we are well into the Spring season, there were almost no tell-tale signs of springs (such as pretty blossoms, chirping robins, etc.). However, the fact that the lake was still frozen was not a deterrent.

The meet convened at the Bay View Café, and was attended by yyyhorn, louzislouz, lovely7, weedos, and mafiosa. Also in attendance were some lomography newcomers – Dayna, Angela, and Jacob (whose future lomo-homes are TBD).

Fortunately for us, at the same time, and in the same location, a meeting of the Red Deer contingent of the Red Hat Society was also underway. Although a bit suspicious at first, they fully embraced the Lomography Spinner 360 camera. These lovely ladies were a riot.

Our humble group also attracted some media attention from the Red Deer Advocate newspaper, whose journalist (Laura) and photographer (Candice) joined us for a bit. A write up about Analogue Alberta appeared in the April 29th Red Deer Advocate paper.

Although it was the first time we all met, it did not take long for the laughs to start flowing. After a quick examination of the various cameras (Spinners, Rockets, Lubitels, Dianas (mini’s and maxi’s), Horizons, Holgas, and on and on and on), we were off. From the Bay View Café, we headed to the Sylvan Lake Lighthouse.

From there, we strolled the main streets, played at the train tracks, met some friendly hippies, and detoured far off the beaten path for some delicious grub at Cities Gastro Pub.

It was at this pub that the friendly local waiter helped us randomly draw the winners of the door prizes (two $25 gift certificates courtesy of Vistek Photo Calgary, and the grand prize of a red Lomography Fisheye camera courtesy of Lomography Canada). Dayna and Laura were the winners of the gift certificates. Jacob won a package of Lomography Color Slide Film (also provide by Lomography Canada). And yyyhorn was the big winner of the Red Fisheye camera. Congrats everyone!

Our next stop was the Big Moo for some ice cream (and where they also sell skateboards…).

And, naturally, we had to commemorate World Pinhole Photography Day by taking some pinhole shots.

Thank you to everyone that attended, and a big welcome to all of the newcomers. We are looking forward to more events in the future so stay tuned.

And last, but not least, an especially big shout-out to Lomography Canada for all of their continued support!
