Mexican Lucha Libre can definitely be defined as bizarre, but if we take a look at the photos taken by Lourdes Grobet there’s an influence of the Diane Arbus signature and style. Read more after the jump.

Lucha Libre or Mexican wrestling, is a big part of my country’s culture, it may have many definitions, but the word that I personally think describes it the best is bizarre. Trust me, going to the arena is a very surreal experience; it’s not just the wrestling match that happens on the ring, but the whole show around it.

There have been several photographers that have captured Mexican Lucha Libre throughout the years, but when looking for a reference that resembles Diane Arbus’ style, the best example I can think of is Lourdes Grobet.

Lourdes Grobet is a Mexican contemporary photographer that has created several projects over the years where the main theme is the Lucha Libre. When you take a look through her book Espectacular de Lucha Libre there’s tons of photos of luchadores on the ring, as well as situations from their personal lives or even movie sets!

I really like the way she captures the true essence of this strange sport. With her photos, Lourdes is able to capture beautiful images of strong men fighting each other on a violent ring as well as captivating moments of their daily lives.
