It's a Family Affair: How my Husband Turned Me in to a Lomo Monster

11

How my husband's idea for a project inspired a whole family. Beginning with one challenge: £30 to buy a film camera, one black and white film, and one colour film. The start of lomographic adventure!

One day, my husband suggested a project. Why don’t we set ourselves a challenge? We can have £30 each to buy one film camera and two films. We will pick a date when we will go out to take photos, and that date will be the deadline to have all the equipment we need within our budget. Now this really started to sound interesting. My mum likes photography too, so we included her in it as well. And then we started getting excited.

In the process of doing the research on what camera to get, I discovered Lomography. Photography had been a passion for me for quite a while, but I had focused on high contrast black and whites analogue photos, always wanting to be accurate and precise, and I do still love that style. But Lomography was something else. The random splashes of colour, the surprising and completely unpredictable results, the laid-back snatches of life as it flashes by. I was hooked.

It didn’t take me to long to find the perfect, quirky little camera, my Smena 8M. The previous owner had brought their own little details to the camera body, adding a little red bas-relief to the side with ‘March 8’ written in Cyrillic, and using what would appear to be a red plastic cap from a milk carton as a lens cap. When it arrived, I was so charmed by it. It even came with the lovely lomo case. I ordered a couple of films, black and white and colour, both Agfa. And we set the date.

I made a few ‘mistakes’ at first. Not winding the camera on far enough, creating unplanned multiple exposures (and don’t worry, I really am beginning to realise now that there are no ‘mistakes’ with Lomography, some of those multiple exposures turned out fab), but I really enjoyed using it, despite the feeling that it could very easily fall apart in my hands! But it wasn’t until I saw the results that I fell in love with it.

And that was it for me. I go on the Lomography website every day, to look at other people’s photos, to get ideas for my next project, to compare films and cameras, and figure out what I like. Just yesterday I received my latest camera, the Horizon Perfekt, a discovery I made whilst looking through photos on the Lomography website, and knew I had to have. I’m planning with my husband to go out exploring once a week, with one film each, and see what we find. I want to experiment with film, and filters, and cross-processing, and I can’t wait to see what I discover!

Meanwhile, my husband is ordering cameras and lenses and film (let’s face it, it’s pretty much all we talk about at the moment!), my mum is spending everyday searching for cameras and film online, and we just gave my mother-in-law a camera as well. She only just went back yesterday from staying with us at the weekend, and by the evening she was already posting her photos on Facebook! Who’s next I wonder? And all because of this project! Lomography is definitely turning out to be a family affair!

(By the way, I would really recommend trying out the project. Set yourself and some friends a challenge, come up with a budget, and name a date, and see what quirky discoveries you will make!)

I'm the only one who has taken the lomography route at the mo. My husband is in to black and white fine art photography, my mum is somewhere inbetween, and my mother-in-law is just discovering digital.

The World, According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

Fresh from the Lab: One Roll of Film and the Lubitel 166U

Adi, Ekeu, and I did a lomowalk around downtown Bandung last Saturday, the beginning of November. We planned to use our Lubitel cameras with only one roll of film each. We were inspired by the One Roll of Film Project by four Tokyo-based photographers with their Hasselblad cameras. This is about the one roll of film I shot with the Lubitel 166U, which made me love shooting in medium format even more.

12 Months, 12 Projects: March Of Caffenol

My list of resolutions for 2015 consists of 12 projects, one for every month. March was for caffenol. You have probably heard of the amazing fact that you can develop black and white photos with coffee, sodium, and vitamin C. I had tried this before but with less than stellar results. Somehow, there's always something going wrong. Time to devote a few rolls to caffenol to finally get the hang of it.
