Paris Wandering in Black and White

Paris is a great city location, which you really have to walk around to really see how beautiful it is and soak up the atmosphere. Even better as black-and-white film works perfectly with it. Take a look at where we visited.

Paris is one of those cities in which you can just wander around and take in all the sights, and that’s just what we did last March, albeit because we were there just over 24hrs, it was a fast paced wander! It is also one of those city that just looks perfect in black and white, even though I must admit I don’t use it as much as I should (I’m more of an x-pro girl). On this trip I had a Holga and XA2 loaded with it and below are some of the results.

As I have said before, you really should, if you can just walk around Paris, because you get to see far more, and things you weren’t planning on. We visited certain landmarks that were definitely worth a view if you are going to visit Paris.

First stop was the Sacre Coeur, one of Paris’ most famous buildings, mainly because it is big, white, and on top of Montmartre, the highest place in the city. It is a lovely spot to sit on any one of the steps up to it and you get a lovely view of Paris below.

We then wandered around the city, visiting Moulin Rouge, the Arc de Triomphe, taking in the scenery along the way. There are so many side streets to visit in Paris and if you are lucky, you might find a little market down one.

Day two started with a trip down to Notre Dame, and then back along the river to the Louvre. It is lovely round here, the buildings are so imposing and there are lots of lovely places to eat in and markets to have a browse around and you will find some lovely little parks.

From here we walked all the way back to the Arc de Triomphe after over an hour of walking to the Eiffel Tower. To see what happened here check out my other article “Eiffel Tower in Black and White”:http://www.lomography.com/magazine/locations/2012/04/20/locations-in-black-and-white-the-eiffel-tower.

Stop bath is a type of chemical used in the darkroom for processing black and white film, aptly named as such because it halts the development of the images. In this case, stop bath is also part of the title that Korean analogue street photographer Soomin Yim has given her body of work, "Stop Bath the City," to represent the forgotten faces of people in the city amid rapid modernization, captured and immortalized on black and white film.

'Aniki-Bòbò': A Tribute to Manoel De Oliveira

This article is a tribute to the great Portuguese film director Manoel de Oliveira, who died last April 2. With an old Praktica loaded with a roll of black and white film, I captured so enthusiastically his city Oporto (Porto) with its famous Ribeira district, the most characteristic of the Lusitanian town. It was here that more than 70 years ago, Manoel De Oliveira created a timeless masterpiece: "Aniki-Bòbò"!
