I have seen a lot of redscaled shots here on Lomography, and almost all of them awed me bizarrely. It is as if my hands caught an allergy that can only be cured if I shoot a redscaled film. So, as soon as I got an extra spool, I DIY redscaled my Kodak Ultramax 400, and boy I was crazed by the results!
I will introduce first the normal Kodak Ultramax 400, according to Kodak it is a “worry-free and easy-to-use high speed film designed for snap shooters. It gives you the flexibility you need to take consistently better pictures in more picture taking situations.” It also adds a few more feet for your flash. Here are some samples of my shots.
Now, here goes the part where I used it as a redscale film. It was the black Saturday LomoWalk, Shutter Revolution decided to have a Visita Iglesia (Church visits) and it was also my very first LomoWalk with SR. I predicted that it will be a hot and sunny day, so I decided to load the said film.
Of course, as a beginner using redscale films, I never expected anything great from my shots, especially since the camera I used is the Lomography Colorsplash (at that time, my only camera) which has a fixed shutter speed of 1/125 and an estimated aperture of f8. I assumed that my shots will be underexposed showing only very dark reds and blue like these photos below.
Because I have no control over the ISO setting of my camera, and I only depend on the available light conditions, I never expected to see other colors in my shots. I was very surprised to see hints of greens and blue, maybe because I mostly shot at where the sunlight hit.
So, I suggest that if you redscaled a Kodak Ultramax 400 and have no control of neither ISO setting, aperture or shutter speed, be sure to shoot during very sunny light conditions and you will surely be surprised when you see the results. Next time, I’ll try it with my Canon EOS so that I can have more control over the settings. Finally, before I say goodbye, here are my favorite shots from the roll I used.
