The Calouste Gulbenkian Garden in Lisbon is not only a great place to spend those sunny afternoons, it is also the perfect place to take that camera you have just loaded with a B&W film. Read on to know more about this beautiful place.
Some months ago I found a disposable camera that was left undeveloped for 4 years. It had many photos taken on an afternoon I had spent with my cousins in this wonderful garden. The rich colors of the garden’s trees and plants yielded lovely photos and I thought, “I definitely have to shoot a roll of slide here soon”. However, when I went back to the garden, I decided to shoot in black and white and I’m really glad I did.
If you love art, you will love the Calouste Gulbenkian Garden. It is home to not one, but two art museums: the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Center of Modern Art. Both museums have wonderful exhibitions and many art-related events are held there as well as in the surrounding garden.
The garden itself is like an art exhibition with the various sculptures that you will find scattered around.
It is a very diverse place: the parts near the museum buildings are more open-air:
While on other parts of the garden, all you see when you look up are trees. It can even feel like a labyrinth, and if you don’t know your way at first you may even feel lost, albeit in a good way. I love walking around the pathways while exploring and discovering new places in it. Although it is situated right in the center of the city of Lisbon, when you are in the more secluded areas of the garden, you will feel like you are miles and miles away from the city.
It has ponds and waterfalls here and there, many ducks, and many, many different types of plants and trees.
It is the perfect place to take a walk, rest under the sun while laying in the grass and enjoy some quiet time. It is also great for children to play and run around. If you are like me and what you love the most is street photography and taking candid shots of people, you will have many opportunities to do so as people feel so relaxed and calm there that they will pay no attention to you or your camera
The Calouste Gulbenkian Garden really is a stunning place and if you haven’t been there and you ever have the chance to go, do not let it pass you by. I guarantee you will not be disappointed and you will be left wanting to come back again and again.
