The Eiffel Tower in Black and White

3

The Eiffel Tower is probably Paris’ most famous landmark and well worth a visit. If like me you happen to visit it in the middle of a rainstorm, all is not lost. Make sure you load some black-and-white film for some atmospheric shots and if you are lucky, some great reflective images!

Last March we went on a very short overnight trip to Paris. We had a non-stop day taking in a variety of tourist attractions just for the photo opportunities. We visited the Sacre Couer, Moulin Rouge, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, and a whole host of places in between. We walked from the Louvre and got to the Eiffel Tower, this was to be the final place we would visit before heading back to the Eurostar. Unfortunately when we were at the Eiffel Tower ready to take our final photos, the rain started and it didn’t stop. We would have to make the most of the conditions, as we didn’t have any other time to take the photos.

I was so looking forward to shooting this iconic landmark, and now all we had were stormy skies and torrential rain. But thankfully all was not lost as I had loaded black-and-white film in both my Holga and my Olympus XA2. The wonderful thing about black-and-white film is that it doesn’t need bright blue clear skies to make it look it’s best like slide film can sometimes do. In fact, cloudy moody skies often make for better photos with black-and-white film. So I decided instead of wasting shots with my other cameras, I would focus on the two cameras with the black-and-white film in.

It turned out that this was the best decision, the black-and-white film gave a far better atmosphere in the photos than slide or negative film would have in the same situation.

It also turned out that the rain was ideal for enabling me to get these shots with the Tower reflecting on the water on the floor, which would never have happened if it wasn’t for the rain!

I think the Eiffel Tower is an ideal location to shoot in black and white as it adds so much atmosphere to the photos. So regardless of the weather, make sure you load some black and white into your camera, don’t just wait for the rain like I did!

'Aniki-Bòbò': A Tribute to Manoel De Oliveira

This article is a tribute to the great Portuguese film director Manoel de Oliveira, who died last April 2. With an old Praktica loaded with a roll of black and white film, I captured so enthusiastically his city Oporto (Porto) with its famous Ribeira district, the most characteristic of the Lusitanian town. It was here that more than 70 years ago, Manoel De Oliveira created a timeless masterpiece: "Aniki-Bòbò"!

The World According to Herr Willie: Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Singapore, like Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, is a likely stopover when you fly far. The city is a tiny urbanized hub but it's very favorable if you know some high-spirited locals. I was lucky to hook up with king kimbo (@hakimbo), who showed me around. He took my lame limbs to the Gardens by the Bay, an amazing place which was visually striking. I was hugging some artificial trees there when I found a baby—a very big baby.

My Year in Analogue: Something New, Something Old

Hi, everyone! I'd like to share with you my 2014 summary on analogue photography. Some things I did were completely new, while some were my good old habits. This year I learned how to develop black and white film, which I consider my greatest milestone. But the most important thing is that in 2014, I remain in love with Lomography! And the rest? Well, let's see...

Transient Living: Armitage & McMillan in Denver, Colorado

If you want to know the heart of a person, peek inside his/her wardrobe! And no, nobody famous said that; I only just made it up. But really, don't you think it's true? After all, the way we dress screams our personality; at least for most of us. And that is why, as soon as I land on a new city, one of the things I absolutely must do is find the local boutiques. Sure, I love the fancy chain boutiques as much as the next person, but there's just something else about a local clothing store. It's unique!

Abstract Visions and Phantasmic Monochromes by Ian Llewelyn

As a wildlife cameraman and photographer, Ian Llewellyn has worked on a number of television projects. The UK-based lensman breaks free from the strict confines of his profession by engaging in monochrome photography. His personal work is a plethora of abstract and experimental imagery, created in a style distinctly his own. Llewellyn is an ardent user of a Leica Monochrom camera, on which he mounted the Lomo LC-A Minitar-1 Lens, producing the most imaginative, phantasmic results.
