Color gels – use colors that work well at dusk, red and yellow work well against a deep blue sky.
Cool subjects – Anything that can fit in one square alone should do the trick for the pattern. I waited until spring and looked for flowers.
How do you do it?
Just go out at dusk. Before you aim at your subject, choose a color gel and put it in front of the flash (be careful not to block the light with your fingers). For these pics, I use a Fuji Superia 400, way expired. Depending on the film, the sky in the background will come dark blue or black but the subject will be illuminated by the color gel and the flash.

In this pic, I aimed down and the flash painted the flowers and the grass.
In this one the gel covered the lens, not the flash.

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. I backed the Kickstarter project for the Lomo’Instant earlier this year and was thrilled to receive it last week.
