Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a wedding photographer specialising in alternative weddings. I run my business with my husband Pete and we tend to attract couples who want to do things a bit differently. We live in Birmingham but travel all over the country shooting weddings with couples who we tend to fall in love with. Before I was shooting weddings I was an Actress and I’m also fluent in Sign Language. I have an obsession for boiled eggs and car boots.. wear floral a lot and have a cat called Maximo.

Why do you shoot with the Diana F+?
I love old photographs and have always been drawn to the imperfections of a photograph rather than how to make them perfect. The Diana has soul.. it has so much texture and produces the most wonderful art and I love the element of surprise that comes with it. Everything now is so instant.. it’s actually really nice to not be able to see your image on the back of your camera and to have to wait to get your prints back.. it’s always such an amazing feeling when you get them back and they’re ace.. feels great.. :)

Do people find it strange that you use such a ‘lo-fi’ camera professionally?
My couples love it and it’s sometimes one of the things that draws them to me in the first place. On occasion at weddings if I have my Diana round my neck I get comments from relatives but more out of curiousity than anything.

What is your favourite 120 film?
Toughie… I have used the Slide 200 which was really nice as the colours were pretty strong which gave the photos a really different feel to how I normally process my digital stuff. To be honest I usually buy a bunch of film and then stick them in my bag (write the ISO on the packet) and then forget which film is which!

Got any tips for Lomographers thinking of turning pro?
I suppose it depends on what you want to do. If it’s weddings then the industry is great right now… lots of couples wanting something different and a massive green light on being creative. All wedding photographers who use any lomography cameras will also document the day on their main digital/film camera obviously but it’s a really special thing to offer a couple.. one of my favourite wedding photos from our wedding was shot on a Diana.

If you were thinking of turning pro I would suggest Second Shooting for a photographer to gain as much experience as possible.. and shoot A LOT. At a wedding in particular there are so many different factors to deal with.. different lighting conditions, people that are not used to being in front of a camera, quick moments that you can’t miss.. you really can’t mess it up at someone’s wedding so the more experience you get before you dive in the better.

You recently rebranded your website, how does a photographer go about building a brand out of their talent?
For me it was never about building my brand it was simply about putting out there what I liked and when you think about it like that then it becomes a lot easier. My website is totally me. If someone comes across it they will get to know me pretty quickly and will either be really attracted to it or not like it at all.. which is great.. I then get to work with couples who have similar tastes and ideas etc. I think everyone has a brand already just waiting to be put on a website..

What’s been your fave photoshoot, ever?
There’s been quite a few weddings that I could easily say were amazing to shoot but I shot an Indian wedding in October and for me, it was such an amzing experience. In the afternoon the family gave the Bride away (Doli) and everyone was crying. It was such a powerful and emotional moment and being immersed in it with your camera is incredible. It feels such an honour to document.

What else is in your camera bag?
2 x Canon 5DMKII’s (35mm f1.4, 85mm f1.2, 24-70mm f2.8)
A Diana
A Holga
A Coronet Cadet
A fisheye
A Fuji Instax 210 wide
An Instax mini

If you could shoot anyone in the world, who would it be and what would they be doing?
I’m in talks with a charity that works with Deaf children in developing countries about possibly going over to document some of their work.. that would be amazing to do something like that.

Other than that, if Johnny Cash was still alive I wouldn’t have minded being his tour photographer…

Photos by Emma Case

Which photographers do you look up to?
Featherlove (from San Diego) is my favourite wedding photographer. She also takes a very different approach to weddings and shoots a lot on her Holga. She was one of the first photographers I found and I was blown away.. we’re friends now and last year she asked me to speak at her London Workshop.. that was pretty nuts.

There’s also a book called ‘Days with my Father’ by a photographer called Phillip Toledano. The book is Phillip’s photo journal of his Father’s (who has severe memory loss) last years. The imagery is incredibly emotional and mesmorizingly beautiful. I find storytelling through photography so powerful.

Got any exciting projects coming up?
I’m going to be doing my own workshops this year which is mental.. and I’m also making sure I do more personal projects as running a business takes up a lot of time! We have 34 weddings booked this year and moving in to a new office space so lots of things to look forward to!
