Self-Portraits: Feet or Face?

4

Like any other lomographer, I have a ton of photos of my own lovely self. Most of my favourites however, feature a different body part to the usual face photos. Read on after the jump to see the gallery.

I am not saying I don’t like self portrait shots of my face — I do. And I have a fair few in my Lomohome, of all different varieties. There are those shot in a mirror:

And those with an outstretched arm (sometimes solo, sometimes with other people in them too):

Most of the shots I have taken of myself however, focus on a very different body part, and that is, my feet. Bizarrely, I don’t enjoy feet very much. I don’t like touching people’s feet and I don’t like people to touch mine. I don’t find feet sexy, and foot fetishes freak me out. Photos of feet on the other hand, I love, especially photos of my feet. The thing is, with photos of my face, they don’t evoke a memory or a feeling in me because it is fairly new seeing your face — you don’t remember how much fun you had somewhere by seeing your own smile, because when you were there enjoying whatever it was, you weren’t looking at your face but at all the things that were going on around you. Your feet, however you can look at, and I often do.

I like seeing shoes (my second biggest passion and collection after cameras!) and I love seeing all the different textures we walk on — from the beautiful Gaudi inspired tiles in Barcelona, to the metal grill covering the subway in New York. Seeing a photo incorporating the shoes I was wearing and the exact spot I was standing in, brings back the most vivid memories for me — which is why my super selfies gallery below is comprised of photos of my own feet!

Occasionally, I let other people jump in and be in my feet shots — but only if I like their shoes!!!

A Salute to the Masters: Bare Soles in Como (A Tribute to Christopher Anderson)

The young artist and Magnum photographer Christopher Anderson published on his agency's website an awesome photo series, one of the images in it a great symbol of freedom, joy of living outdoors, purity, innocence, candor, and girlhood: the bare sole of a female lifted up, taken at the Central Park in New York. Like many other great Magnum photographers, Anderson explored this interesting body part through photographs. For this tribute, I chose a series of bare feet images I took along the promenade of the lake Como. Take a look!

    Registering Moments With the Lomo'Instant

Some people say instant photos bring about a feeling of nostalgia. Although I often use the Lomo'Instant Camera with different crazy accessories such as the Splitzer and color gels, I have to agree there is something about it — dreamy vignettes maybe? — that always makes me want to go back in time and experience it all over again. In the name of analogue photography and good old memories, we passed by some classic spots in Vienna and took one shot after the other. Take a closer look at our gallery.

A Salute to the Masters: D-Day in Como? (A Tribute to Robert Capa)

This article is dedicated to one of the most important masters of photography, Robert Capa. Capa is well known for his photos of war, from the famous image of the Republican Spanish soldier collapsing backwards after being fatally shot to his images taken in Indochina. He was also a co-founder of the famous Magnum Photo Agency, the first cooperative agency for freelance photographers worldwide. For this article, I took advantage of a rare event held in my city, Como, some weeks ago: a military drill for civil protection purposes.
