The free outdoor art gallery that is Hongdae!

Just wandering the streets of Hongdae, Seoul is as good as a trip to any modern art gallery. You can see a constantly changing array of colorful street art everywhere you go in this vibrant corner of the city.

Finding street art in Hongdae is as easy as finding a piece of hay in a haystack. There are a few places to head to if your goal is to specifically find street art .

The first port of call is close to the subway, head out of Hongik station via exit 9 and turn left straight away to get into the heart of Hongdae. Go straight until you reach a dead end then turn left and go straight, there is an outdoor gallery on your left here. These pieces change fairly often and are always interesting and original.

The second place to head to is the Hongdae playground. Take the same exit 9 from Hongik station and walk straight until the first main road on your left, take this road up ‘til you get to the university. Turn right at the top of the road then go up the hill on your right. The park is here on your left and the graffiti can be found on the buildings at the back. Much more can be found on the small streets behind the park as well. It’s also worth noting here that there is a free art market in this park at weekends during the summer and occasionally a silent disco on a Saturday night. The Lomography Seoul Store is also round the corner.:)

Thirdly, the streets next to and behind the university. The best way to find these alleyways is to follow the directions to the university, crossover to the same side as the university building and turn right down the main road. Then take a left just after the Starbucks and explore away!

Street art is everywhere in Hongdae and while these instructions will get you to some guaranteed finds it’s much more fun to simply explore and find your way round! Happy hunting!

Speakers' Corner: Interview with Photographer Philip Wolmuth

Having a respectable career photographing social, political and economical matters, Philip Wolmuth is capable of starting a dialogue with the public via his thought-provoking photographs. Going through the collective of images on his latest work, it seems impossible not to be instantly affected by the rawness of the emotions captured within the images. The passion, the anger, the commotion, the rebellion, the fervor, the shouting, the devotion; his work is inebriating. It's as if the images are screaming at you and, for a short while, you are transported to the Speakers' Corner without actually setting foot on that location.

Geoffrey Berliner On Photographic Processes, Old and New

Geoffrey Berliner is the Executive Director of the Penumbra Foundation and the Center for Alternative Photography in New York. As the head of an organization whose goals are 'to be a comprehensive resource for photographers at any level' and 'to continue to publicize the impact photography has had and continues to have on culture, history and the arts,' his exposure to photographic materials -from 19th century gems to modern equipment- is so extensive, one cannot even begin to fathom just how much knowledge and experience this man has acquired. His collection of over 2000 vintage Petzval lenses is unparalleled, and the object of envy of both traditional and contemporary photographers. Although such lenses are reputed to require a certain level of skill to be used, Berliner seems to manage them with so much ease, producing splendid results.

    Registering Moments With the Lomo'Instant

Some people say instant photos bring about a feeling of nostalgia. Although I often use the Lomo'Instant Camera with different crazy accessories such as the Splitzer and color gels, I have to agree there is something about it — dreamy vignettes maybe? — that always makes me want to go back in time and experience it all over again. In the name of analogue photography and good old memories, we passed by some classic spots in Vienna and took one shot after the other. Take a closer look at our gallery.
