Hot chicken and cocktails in plastic bags

A great place to have dinner and a cocktails in Hongdae, Seoul. Flying Chicken is upstairs and Vinyl is below.

Vinyl has been a favorite cocktail place of ours for some time. It’s easy to find on the main road, simply exit Hongik station via exit 9 and go straight until you get to the first major road on the left and turn up it. Head straight up to the university and turn right at the top of the road, go straight until you get to Vinyl on your right, Flying Chicken is above. Vinyl is small but hard to miss as the outside is shaped like a robot.

On this particular night, we decided to head upstairs to Flying Chicken for some food before our cocktails. We opted for some cheesy chicken which was spicy, but not too hot, and very delicious. The restaurant was small, interestingly decorated, and a very nice place to dine.

After our dinner, we headed downstairs for some cocktails. Vinyl is a very small establishment with room for only about 10-12 people at a time. If you are lucky enough to get a table then you will be able to enjoy the eclectic décor and some of their delicious cocktails, served in their trademark plastic bags. If, as is often the case, Vinyl is full when you arrive, then you can still enjoy a bag of cocktail from the takeaway window.

Vinyl is worth checking out for the cozy atmosphere and novelty value of drinking your cocktails from a plastic bag. In the summer months it’s nice to get takeout and head up to the playground or simply wander the streets and soak up the atmosphere.

A Salute to the Masters: Stairs (A Tribute to Alexander Rodchenko)

This article is a tribute to the great Russian photographer, sculptor, graphic designer, and painter Alexander Rodchenko. He was a pioneer in the search for unusual perspectives, with extreme view from above or from below, and with an innovative use of the diagonals and tilted views in his dynamic compositions. For this article, I was inspired by his most famous photo, a woman climbing a staircase, taken in 1930, which is reminiscent of the famous Odessa stair of the film "Battleship Potemkin" by Sergei Eisenstein.
