Make the Best Out of Your Expired Films

11

When I started Lomography back in 2007, people always told me that using expired films is very cool and the results are very good too! After that, my adventure for searching expired films began.

After nearly 5 years of Lomography, I still use expired films. I’ve been through good times and bad times using expired films on several cameras. Here are some quick tips on how you can make the best out of your expired films:

1. Don’t forget to use flash!

2. Shoot when the sun is up!

3. Consider pairing your expired films with a camera that is fully manual. Fully manual here means that you can control the exposure of your shots. I used the Horizon Perfekt on the example below so I could control how much light is needed to expose the expired film.

4. Overexpose your shots when using a Lomo LC-A+. This means that I always set the ISO to 100 when I used an expired film which rates ISO 400 or ISO 200 to give the film extra light.

5. Have fun with your expired film. Expect the unexpected! Since your film is expired and it may even smell funny, you have to be ready for a surprise when you receive your roll from the photo lab. This is the best part!

The conclusion is you have to expose your expired films with extra lights. Hope these tips are useful for your future shooting! Have fun!

Transient Living: The Craft and the Craftsmen of Denver, Colorado

The people of a city, to me, speak volumes about its culture and sense of community. And that is why I sought out the people who make Denver that much more interesting after the initial period of settling down. My search lead to a few establishments that have contributed to making Denver what it is today. In the second story on Transient Living, I present to you two of such establishments: The Craftsman & Apprentice, and A Small Print Shop.

Reviving An Old Polaroid 1000 Camera

Some time ago, my parents-in-law gave me an old Polaroid camera that they used during my wife's childhood. After some investigation, I found out that Polaroid had stopped making instant film. But the factory in Enschedé, the Netherlands had been taken over by The Impossible Project, so I bought a package of fresh film and gave it a try!

At the Funfair with my Horizon Perfekt

Every year my city Como hosts, for the Easter period, a great fun fair. This is a great occasion to test a camera, to make experiments with films, to have fun and to photograph people while also having fun! This year, I used my gem, the wonderful Horizon Perfekt (that I bought from the Lomography Online Shop) loaded with a timeless film, a Kodak Tri-X 400 developed, as usually for b/w, by myself. I participated in the Kickstarter campaign and purchased my very own new Petzval lens. I can't wait to use with with my digital camera to experience its wonderful bokeh effect. I also wanted to try its effects when using a film camera but the lens has an EF mount. I didn't have a Canon camera. See what I did with it after the jump.
