Influence or Coincidence: The Ballet Ballad

4

Sometimes, having a steady a hand isn’t all that matters when taking a good picture. So much so, that a blurry picture can often make an excellent shot. This installment of Influence or Coincidence looks at the ballet shots of Alexey Brodovitch and who of our fellow lomographers came closest to his delicate motion.

Russian-born American émigré Alexey Brodovitch is best known for the two decades he spent as art director of Harper’s Bazaar between 1938 and 1958. However, right before that, from 1935 to 1937, he shot these blurry, black and white ballet shots. As you can see, the images capture ballet’s magical moments both on stage and behind-the-scenes.

Brodovitch’s weapon of choice? A 35mm Contax. As you might have guessed, he used no flash, and low speed film and this in turn caused his style to deviate from the rigid, sharp photography typical of the time.

Speaking of style, here are the shots I picked from lomography.com which I feel best match Brodovitch’s:

Once again, it was a close call but congratulations to tsnsak who I feel came closest.
