Conquering the World, One Doubles Project at a Time

How does one travel the world with limited resources and limited vacation leaves from work? For us lomographers, this would not be a hindrance. Conquering the world is within reach.

It just hit me recently, after some failed attempts going on an out-of-the-country trip, that the next best thing to see or visit other countries is through some doubles project. I have done a couple of doubles project with my fellow lomographers here in Manila and those were very exciting. What could be more exciting and fun than doubles with lomographers from other parts of the world?

My first doubles try outside Manila is with stonerfairy from Singapore. I love the results from that doubles, so I’m thinking, I would like to start this “conquer the world project” with lomographers from Singapore. Recently, I have done doubles with Filipino lomographer friends based in Singapore, b0rn2b1ush and ponzi as a start. The results were amazing.

After Singapore, I’m planning to do a couple more film swaps with lomographers from the Southeast Asia region, then followed by the rest of the Asian regions. As of this writing, in transit are rolls from Malaysia c/o lomographer adzfar and his group. After my Asian tour, I would like to plan my next doubles project/film swaps from lomographers in North and South America. After that, countries in Europe. I just hope I can accomplish all this within the year.

For someone who has limited resources, traveling the world would be next to impossible. But, thank goodness for film swaps, I would be able to see the world and at the same time not hurt my pocket. Films and shipping costs are just way cheaper than plane tickets and hotel reservations. Though it may not be as exciting to be there in actual, it’s still exciting nevertheless. And more colorful! So, let us all go out and conquer the world!

    Analog By Nature

It's late October in Copenhagen and summer was well and truly behind us. With the nights drawing in, the chances of going out with one of my cameras was slim. All was not lost at this time of year, however, as it allowed me time to focus on my own personal music projects—I am a professional composer/musician and audio engineer at my own studio by day.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Amazon

It was the Amazon which I had longed for my whole life. And when it was finally a set deal that I will travel to Brazil with two of my best friends for the Copa do Mundo (World Cup), we really had to start our adventure in the Amazon. I had known about this magical place deep in the rainforest. There was a lodge run by local people of indigenous background, with wooden houses that float on the water and a limited number of visitors. It was eco-tourism as how it should be. To preserve and to celebrate one of the most impressive locations I have seen so far.

Geoffrey Berliner On Photographic Processes, Old and New

Geoffrey Berliner is the Executive Director of the Penumbra Foundation and the Center for Alternative Photography in New York. As the head of an organization whose goals are 'to be a comprehensive resource for photographers at any level' and 'to continue to publicize the impact photography has had and continues to have on culture, history and the arts,' his exposure to photographic materials -from 19th century gems to modern equipment- is so extensive, one cannot even begin to fathom just how much knowledge and experience this man has acquired. His collection of over 2000 vintage Petzval lenses is unparalleled, and the object of envy of both traditional and contemporary photographers. Although such lenses are reputed to require a certain level of skill to be used, Berliner seems to manage them with so much ease, producing splendid results.

In the hands of those capable wielding it, art can be a powerful weapon. With it, for one, creation of fantastical realms far removed from the one we live in is entirely possible. Through collage making, Eugenia Loli builds such worlds that invite the audience not only to marvel at them but also, and most importantly, to see through the hodgepodge of images to find meaning and formulate interpretations.

Speakers' Corner: Interview with Photographer Philip Wolmuth

Having a respectable career photographing social, political and economical matters, Philip Wolmuth is capable of starting a dialogue with the public via his thought-provoking photographs. Going through the collective of images on his latest work, it seems impossible not to be instantly affected by the rawness of the emotions captured within the images. The passion, the anger, the commotion, the rebellion, the fervor, the shouting, the devotion; his work is inebriating. It's as if the images are screaming at you and, for a short while, you are transported to the Speakers' Corner without actually setting foot on that location.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.
