“It is a dream, a universe. A universe full of lives, people, and power of nature.”

This is how Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, in an interview, describes his artworks that are sure to blow you away. Making his signature masterpieces with gunpowder and fireworks, the full creative process and results are literally and figuratively explosive.

Born in 1957 in Quanzhou, Fujian Province in China, Cai obtained training on stage design at the Shanghai Theater Academy. Since then, he has dabbled with multiple mediums, such as drawings, installation, and videos, combining and experimenting with them to create innovative works of art. During his residence in Japan from 1986 to 1995, Cai explored the idea of using gunpowder in his drawings, which eventually led to his large-scale explosive art and events.

Grounding his concepts on Eastern philosophy and modern-day social issues, Cai’s projects are visually challenging, calling on to viewers to explore beyond the usual methods and mediums commonly associated with art.

From December 5, 2011 to May 26, 2012, Cai will showcase his work at the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) in Doha, Qatar, his biggest exhibition since 2008 at the Guggenheim Museum. Entitled “Cai Guo-Qiang: Saraab,” the exhibit features the diverse works of the New York-based Chinese artist, “ranging from his signature gunpowder drawings to large-scale site-specific installations and the explosion event of Black Ceremony.” There are more than fifty works in Saraab (“Mirage”), which includes 16 newly commissioned pieces, 30 recent works, and 9 documentary videos.

The exhibit is also part of the Arab Museum of Modern Art’s “commitment to present an Arab perspective on modern and contemporary art as it turns eastward to consider dynamics across Asia for the first time.”

In response to his innovative art, Lomography commemorates Cai and the Saraab exhibit with the release of the Diana F+ Cai Guo-Qiang, the latest to join the Diana Family’s line of cameras. The edition comes in grey and black tones, and is designed with artworks that Cai himself created.
