Gokarna a Peaceful Destination

6

Gokarna is definitely a magnificent place for a beach holiday but also nice to spend time in the village, temples are everywhere. It is downright inexpensive. Food and accommodation believe me is dirt-cheap on these beaches.

Gokarna is an ancient temple town and center for Sanskrit studies. Many Hindus perform the last rites of a person here. Brahmin priests go about busily with their religious duties. It’s full of mythological references and there is a very mystic atmosphere. Gokarna is also a town of contrasts as it is a temple town and also a holiday destination. The place is full of palm and coconut trees. It has five popular beaches namely Gokarna (in the town), Kudle, Om, Paradise and Half Moon.

Gokarna beach is located close to the town with pilgrims taking sacred bath in the sea to attain atonement before visiting the famous temples. Om beach seems to be the most popular of them all. The other beaches are an absolute delight for people looking to get away to a beach. Though they do get its crowd of people coming to see and spend a few hours at the beach, most don’t opt for night stay and hence its just the idyllic romantic getaway. Not recommended for adrenaline junkies since it does not offer scope for any adventure activities. Sunrise and sunset, I can imagine, are both amazing but I was fighting with the monsoon. Starting from the village the track to the five beaches last one day. Early morning walks to the beaches are awesome when you can hear the sound of the waves, birds chirping and the trees slowly swinging due to the wind.

You can literally live on the beach with a few beers and laze in the hammocks with a book. But don’t forget the village is a fantastic place. Everything about this town is very quaint – temples, narrow roads, shops, people, houses, etc.. Language spoken here is so musical to ears and people are very generous. Gokarna can be reached by buses from Kumta(36 km) and Karwar(59km) you can reach these places by train. Private buses(Vijayanad RoadLines-VRL, Sugama, SeaBird) operate night journeys from the capital city of Bangalore to Gokarna daily. I had a memorable stay at Gokarna and have many moments to cherish for life ☺, wish the same to you all who are planning to visit!! Have a nice trip!
