Reminiscing Quezon City

6

Reminiscing the past is always good so we can learn from it. With my camera, I looked back on the history of one of the Philippine's heroines and my personal history at the university where I earned my degree. This is Quezon City, my second home.

It’s always good to look back on the past and commemorate things that have made us what we are today. And this is what I recently did with a photowalk using my Ultra Wide and Slim camera at the Tandang Sora Shrine in Banlat Road and in the University of the Philippines-Diliman, sites which are both in Quezon City, Philippines.

Melchora Aquino, also known as Tandang Sora, was a revolutionary hero born on January 6, 1812. She’s considered as one of the heroines during the Philippine Revolution because she helped the Katipuneros (led by Andres Bonifacio in 1896) by treating their wounds and offering food and shelter. Tandang Sora was caught by the Spaniards and was exiled to Guam. Fortunately, Tandang Sora was able to come back to her Philippine homeland, before she died on February 20, 1919 at the age of 107.

Today, “Tandang Sora” is more known to Filipinos as a street in Quezon City than as a heroine of the Katipunan. To address this, the Quezon City local government had a grand 200th year birthday celebration to commemorate Tandang Sora, and built a special shrine in the vicinity of what used to be her hometown in Banlat. When I visited there, the guy who was guarding the place was one of Tandang Sora’s great, great, great grandson!

On a more personal blast from the past, I came back to the university, which I considered my home for four years – the University of the Philippines in Diliman. UP Diliman is where I learned that the world was bigger, scarier, and more fun than I ever imagined. I went back there mainly just to reminisce — to see my old college building, the Oblation, the “tusok” waiting sheds, the “ikot” jeep, and the canopy of trees along the Oval. I was glad to see that the bike lanes are already fully operational, and people from all walks of like really make use of that lane not only to bike but also to jog, play, and even just walk hand in hand.

There’s always so much to learn from the past so it’s always good to look back on it once in a while, especially with an analogue camera in hand. Why not have a walk back to the places from your past and try it out for yourself? :)

Every summer, my soul screams for a lazy, hot day back at my parents' home, for some good food, relaxation, and catching up with childhood friends. This year is no different, so I went back down to my small hometown in the very northeast of Belgium to enjoy a perfect laid back day doing nothing and everything. And of course, I brought my analogue cameras along to eternalize all of these small but grand moments in life.

I am a Mad Analogue Scientist: New Experiments with 35mm Films and Chemicals

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe! You can find a sample of the effects in this article.

As you can see in my albums, I love to photograph sports events. In this case, I used a pretty Actionsampler camera to document a mini basketball game played in the park of my city Como, in celebration of the Festival of Sports. It's a funny camera with interesting results! Take a look after the jump!
