Ansel Adams’ Los Angeles

Life in black and white. Ever stopped to think what that would be like? Seventy years and a lot has changed. Take the landscape for example. Or the fashion sense. See these B&W photos of LA by Ansel Adams and feel the nostalgia.

Ansel Adams shot these photographs as part of a Fortune Magazine commission which appeared in the March 1941 issue. He shot over 200 black and white photographs but of course, only a few images were included together with the article. Ansel Adams a photojournalist on assignment! Just think about that!

Then, in the early 60s Adams rediscovered these photos and donated them to the Los Angeles Public Library. In an accompanying letter he wrote: “The weather was bad over a rather long period and none of the pictures were very good…” Talk about self-critical.

The silver-gelatin prints on exhibit are made from the original negatives. On display to the public for the first time, their sale will help the Los Angeles Public Library.

Ansel Adams Los Angeles is on view until April 21, 2012. Find out more here.

Lantern Slides From the 'Psychic Photography From a New Angle' Series

Mysterious apparitions and other inexplicable phenomena on film, or generally speaking, for that matter, are as highly debated topics today as they were many decades ago. In 1934, a certain Mr. C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield held a lecture at 76 Clarkehouse Road located in the same city to "demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography" before an invited committee. MacCarthy's demonstration was accompanied by a series of photographs titled "Psychic Photography From a New Angle."
