Firstly, we want to bring this to your attention: LomoCouple Esa and Ilah have been together for 14 years. Isn't that amazing?! A couple that shoots together, stays together. Let's take a journey into their sweet analogue world, shall we?
Hello! Tell us a bit about yourselves.
Esa: I got into Lomography out of sheer curiosity. I knew my good friend Hakimbo who was into it, went out for a shoot together and got hooked ever since. Plus, I was kinda getting bored with the digital stuff and how everyone is a photographer these days. Getting back to the basics excites me, especially not knowing the outcome of a photo. It makes everything fresh again.
We may not look like it but Ilah and I been together for 14 years…and been married in the last 4.
Ilah: I’m a food fanatic and like taking pictures of food and then blog about it, yup I’m an amateur food blogger/cook. I love to take photos of anything and everything especially taking black and white photos of trees and flowers and my latest obsession is taking photos light leaks from the sun.
What sorts of favourite activities do you do together as a couple?
We absolutely love food and a lot of our activities revolve around makan (Malay word for “eat”) places. We also love cozying up in bed and watching CSI Miami on cable. We often host dinners at our place catching up with close friends or just to play board games. Both of us have always believed that it’s the simplest things that make us the happiest.
Do you usually shoot together? What are some of your favourite things about shooting photographs together?
Esa: Yes. We like to challenge each other on composition and aesthetic value. We always try to take the less beaten path and explore new sceneries. Taking photos together every session is a new experience.
Ilah: Esa is more technical than I am and he will teaches me about lighting and focusing. And as for me I will just point and shoot. At the end of the day we will be satisfied and happy especially once we have send our film for developing.
Tell us about the film swap that you both did for this story!
Esa: This is our very first film swap actually so we kinda not know what to expect. So when in doubt, apply the Lomography Rule Number 6: Don’t think. And we did just that.
Ilah: No concepts, just go out there and get Lomo crazy! Results don’t matter, what matters most is that we had fun shooting together.
If you could gift your partner any Lomography camera, what would it be and why?
Esa: This is Ilah’s first time using the LC-A+ and she was totally diggin’ it! I’ll definitely get her an LC-A – maybe a white one ’coz’ she’s my “special edition.”
Ilah: That’s an easy one! Lubitel 166+. He’s been going on and on about it and it’s driving me nuts! Esa has this thing about vintage stuff. Once he see’s something vintage or vintage-looking, he can’t shake it off. He used to ride a Vespa, enough said.
If you could go together to any place in the world to shoot, where would it be and why?
Ilah: That will be a very long list, and Japan will be at the very top. We can watch Japan Hour the whole day and do nothing else.
Esa: What’s there not to like about Japan? It has everything! Beautiful culture, people, nature, fashion and I could go on and on. There’s practically endless reasons for you to shoot in Japan. And, have you seen the toilets there?!
Do you have any tips & tricks or shoutouts for other LomoCouples out there?
Esa: All I have to say is that; let your imagination run totally wild. Go crazy! Don’t be afraid to try. Just suck it up and shoot!
Ilah: Most importantly, enjoy each other’s company and there’s (his) Mastercard for everything else! Haha!
What will you be doing this Valentine’s Day?
Ilah: We haven’t really thought about it yet. Probably just a simple dinner and a walk.
Esa: We could be bungee jumping, but as long as we’re together, it doesn’t matter.
