Love at First Lomo: Horizon Perfekt

The is the beginning of the never ending love story of me and my Horizon Perfekt. Read more after the break.

Horizon Perfekt is not my first Lomo camera. I presume it’s not any lomographer’s first as well, as it’s very pricey to be the first.

How did I fall in love with the Horizon? I think it dates back about 3 years ago, when I had just began to build up my own LomoHome. One day as usual as I was browsing random Photos from the community, I saw this amazing picture, which later on I found out that it was taken in La Pedrera, Barcelona (and that’s my major drive to Barcelona!!). It’s definitely a love at the first sight.

This picture has been my wallpaper for a few years from now. I have no clue anymore (as I was still very new that time but I managed to save this picture) who’s the great lomographer behind this picture, could someone please light up the end of the tunnel for me please?

From then on, I started to save up for my Horizon. About a year ago, Lomography announced that they had reduced the price of Horizon, I knew that it’s not that far from me anymore. But I still hesitated due to its price… until the day, that I finally booked my flight to Barcelona, I told myself that THIS IS THE TIME!! So I happily made my purchase from the online store, waited for the package, unpacked the box, and flew to Barcelona few days after.

For days, I carried my new darling around my neck all around Catalonia, snapping pictures with full enthusiasm, changing one roll after another… And then, on the evening before I left, I suddenly realized that the film rewind lever did not move when I pulled the advanced lever… WHAT!?!!! So I hurried to the nearest Lomography Store and tried to get the problem fixed.

Survivor shots in Barcelona

Anyway, let’s cut the long story short, the outcome is that I didn’t get to capture anything with all the rolls previously taken, anything thereafter was okay but it was such a sad story.

So my advice is, get yourself familiarized with your new darling before going on together to a new journey because you would never know what kind of surprises you might get, as in not all surprises are welcoming.

But trust me, the Horizon Perfekt is definitely worth every penny you spend. The satisfaction that it brings to you is just priceless. Take a look at my Bali shots a month later!

Horizon at Bali!

Happy our first Valentine’s Day to you, my love.

More Bali, with Tungsten~

Caleb Savage: Into the Darkroom, Out in the Open

When asked to recall the moment they first became truly interested in photography, most photographers would remember the magical feeling of picking up a hand-me-down or secondhand camera, the thrill of shooting an entire roll through, and the elation upon seeing and holding their first ever set of photographs. Caleb Savage, however, had quite a unique experience. At 10 years old, he had his first taste of working in the darkroom making prints at Boy Scout camp, thereby beginning a more than a decade-long affinity with photography.

Beijing is a ready-made template for panoramic shots. Tourist baits like The Great Wall, Forbidden City and Summer Palace stretch for miles. Those who walk from end to end will have more to say. For instance, that the ground goes on to infinity. Or that they have never been so tired and amazed all at once.

Testing a Yashica TLR Camera After 55 Years in Storage

Though I am not a professional, photography is in my genes. My father was a photographer and technician in the Air Force and accumulated a number of cameras during his life. This is a story about one of those cameras, a Yashica 635 TLR. I brought the camera—after being in storage for about 55 years—back to life with a roll of Portra 160 during the golden hour at Bellevue Botanical Gardens in Washington.
