Shin Pond, ME

A yearly retreat to Shin Pond, Maine.

It was about a year since we first entered these sacred woods. So peaceful and relaxing that we had to take revenge a year later. Only three courageous knights survived last year’s excursion, but they are wise and recruit a fourth.

We set up camp in an old hunting cabin. No electricity. No plumbing. No other human being seen for days. We live off the land, and as much as we can carry from the grocery store. During the day, we grab 6-packs of ale and take to the canoes to tackle Upper Shin Pond’s mighty waters. Other stray houses can be seen planted around the lake, but human life is scarce. At night, with the day’s ale still fresh on our breath, we sit around a glowing orange fire and start another round of lagers. Unlike the previous visit, the moon is full and shines bright enough to drown out a majority of the stars. Planet Earth’s nightlight. It reminds us of the huge body of water that’s sitting right next to us. Back in the canoe, we quietly paddle out far enough and just stare. It feels like such an honor to witness something so serene. I don’t feel worthy of something so grand, but accept it just the same. We paddle back and rest up for tomorrow’s plundering.

A day trip to Baxter State Park offers long drives, good hikes, and natural water slides made from shallow flowing streams and large slick rocks. It is dangerous and unforgiving, but we are the gambling type. At dusk, we return to camp with skinned elbows, bruised knees, and no regrets.

I am extremely grateful to have experienced such a place. Thank you, Mr. S.

A nice place - but also seems to be a perfect filmset for a classical slasher horror movie!

There should be bears, but I have yet to see one. We stumbled upon a moose last year, running across the narrow road to our cabin.

The Magic Yet To Come: Part 5

Last week, I received the strangest thing through my letterbox. It was a postcard with this photograph on 1 side. The photo is of me sitting by the sea whilst I was on vacation last year. But I have literally no idea who took this shot – That’s why I came here, to ask for your help on my search for my mysterious photographer and to try and get to bottom of the riddle they wrote me. Please help me if you can!

    Finally, My Own Petzval Lens

In April of this year I had the chance to test the Petzval Lens and to write a review on it for the German photography forum Kwerfeldein. The lens excited me from the very beginning, at the time it was introduced on Kickstarter. I was afraid that once I had tested the lens, I would want to have one of my own! Well, that’s what happened; a year later, I finally bought my very own Petzval lens.

Spinner 360: Pull the Cord and Let the Magic Happen!

The story between the Spinner 360 and I goes way back to the year 2010, when Lomography decided to send me a beta model of the Spinner 360 to test. It was a complete surprise! I thought, "What the hell is that?" as I first took this camera out of the package. Then, when my little brother grabbed it from me and pulled the cord, it buzzed and turned 360°! We all had the same expression: "Whoa..."

    Object of My Affection: Subbuteo

In my early adolescence, I liked to play table football. For my 12th birthday, my parents gifted me with a wonderful Subbuteo table soccer game set that I had wished for many months! This was my favorite toy until I discovered other interesting hobbies, like ham radio and electronics. So after some years, I gave away this game to other kids. I always remembered this game with pleasure and a hint of nostalgia.
