This is the story of how in december 2011, I fell in love with lomography. A funny coincidence brought two Lomo cameras into my world out of nowhere... and it was the greatest Christmas ever.
Since I can remember, I’ve found photography quite interesting and it’s been a few years now since I’ve been an amateur photographer. Truth is, although I’ve loved analogue photography for years, I hadn’t heard about Lomography since a few months ago.
It all started when my girlfriend talked me about it and so, why not, I decided to try and give her a camera for her birthday. I try to give her a Smena 8M, but I couldn’t afford it at the end. But the moment the salesman put the camera in my hands and I felt it, it was one of those moments in your life when you definitely know. It felt great, it was great. So as I couldn’t get the camera, I gave her something else and the time went by.
But luckily for me I started doing some research about Lomography and the Holga became an inside joke for me and my girlfriend since we had the chance to try it when a friend lend it to us.
All the magic happened when Christmas came.
I received a LomoKino and a Lubitel 2. From two different people. It was a wonderful surprise.
First it came the Lubitel 2, my beloved first Lomo camera. My girlfriend was trying to get an Holga for me, because of the inside joke. But he found an Lubitel 2 and decided with would be a better christmas present (it was awesome).
The funny part of the story comes when, meanwhile she was looking for the camera and buying the Lubitel 2, I entered to the Lomography website and online shop and I saw the incredible and amazing LomoKino. I saw it and I remember saying: “Wow, that sure is a revolutionary filmmaking device”. My mom was there so I showed it to her and explain how amazing it was and why (You know, being able to actually film something in a world that’s been digitalized almost entirely) . Since that early december day all I talked about was Lomography, Lomo cameras, LomoKino and film formats. I couldn’t get enough of it.
My girlfriend was amazed, said it was great for me to talked about it all the time, made her present even more perfect and suitable. So, on Christmas Eve she surprised me with this giant box, which I opened and found it had smaller boxes in it. First I opened a little one and found some 120 films, when I rushed an opened the big one I found the Lubitel 2. That camera is just a lovely jewel; being able to look from above, the luminosity of its finder and its vintage nature are just addictive. I even enjoy just looking at it, looking through the finder. I was actually hooked to Lomography since that camera touch my hands.
And then, as if things couldn’t get better, on Christmas Day my mom surprised with, again, a box. I opened it to found something really really awesome. It was a whole package of lomography love! (Mom, I love you! Hope you ever read this!) It had the amazing and incredible LomoKino with LomoKinoscope, it included several Lomography films for me to experiment and even Fritz the Blitz was there! I couldn’t believe it. It made me so happy. I even found the cookie cutters! And by the way they are really funny and beautiful.
Since then i’ve been shooting and filming, not as much as I want to but it’s a matter of time for me to get more movies and photos! Thanks to that Christmas I found and introduce myself to the amazing Lomography world! And believe me, I’ve got a big hunger to experiment and discover the potential this cameras have. Because of the gloriously analogue nature of them, the possibilities are unlimited!
