Love at First Lomo: My Love Affair with My first Lomo Camera

What the Hell is Lomography?! That was the first thing that came into my mind when I first discovered Lomography. I discovered Lomography through a friend, who posted an album in his Multiply site with pictures of his band, Shoulder State, lomographed by another friend. I was liked, F**K! This is way cool!

That was the start of my Lomography Love Affair. I messaged my friend right away and asked him about how they shot it or what camera they used. I got an answer after minutes of waiting for a reply. He told me it was taken using a LC-A+, a Lomography camera. What the hell is Lomography? Because he was too busy to explain, he gave me links about it and a link to a local Lomography group. There I discovered LomoManila. I went to all the sites he linked me, log on to all of them and started to frantically research about Lomography.

It was all too overwhelming! What cameras to choose from, what kind of film to use, the meaning of different terminologies, etc. It’s really hard for someone who never delved into photography to grasp all of these, but after some thorough reading, the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography caught my attention. From there, everything changed.

I thought this is my thing—photography without rules (well the 10 Golden rules for me is a mere guide rather than being “real” rules), an organized chaos and here I can be an artist of some sorts even without a creative side. And so, the hell with bank reconciliation and financial analysis. I run out of the office and went to the nearest Team Manila (an official LSI retailer store) shop and bought myself a Holga 120CFN. That big, black, old-looking camera caught my eyes while looking through the camera cabinets. I was quite hesitant about the 120 format but I bought it nevertheless. I bought the camera because I thought it’s cool and has that macho feel about it. I also thought it would be a good conversation piece if I’m going to use 120mm film. So, it started. And here are a couple of shots I took from my first rolls:

After my first roll, I was quite disappointed with the results. It wasn’t what I saw in the gallery of LomoManila, but after some members saw what I’ve captured, they told me it wasn’t that bad for a first roll. Those comments gave me that extra push to continue, until I brought my Holga 120 CFN every day. I brought it to the office, parties, drinking sessions and even during my son’s football games. With every roll, I felt I was getting better at this, and realized it was time to get serious. Got serious, I did!

After sometime, after countless rolls of 120 film, I have decided to buy me a couple more cameras, this time, of the 35mm variety. From that day I discovered my Holga, I have never looked back. There were many cameras that came and went in my collection but my Holga 120 CFN is still there. It has become my old reliable for taking medium format photos. Also, it still is a conversation piece every time I bring it.
