Love at First Lomo: A Passion for the Diana Mini

The story of my love for the small, but powerful Lomo Diana Mini. This is where it all began and why I'll never look back to the digital days. From my first analogue experience to my passion for Lomography today.

Growing up, my dad always had a passion for photography. When I was old enough he taught me what to turn and when to shoot with his expensive 120 film camera, for the perfect shot. We went to Edinburgh zoo and he taught me about composition. At the safari park he taught me to shoot close-ups of the animals.

But that was just it, the shots were ‘perfect’ and looking back now, they could have been taken with a digital, point and shoot camera today.

I stumbled upon Lomography purely by accident one day, while looking for inspiration for my art. What struck me first was the variety. The vibrant colours of the LC-A, the dream like subtlety of the Diana.

It wasn’t until two years later, 2011, that I purchased my first camera – the Diana Mini. At first I was unsure of what to do with the camera, I hadn’t loaded a film in years. Reading the manual over and over, I cautiously made the step to get a film loaded and shot my first roll. Not attempting anything too fancy for my first try, I walked around the garden taking a few photos here and there.

When it came to developing the photos, I really didn’t think they would turn out. I was so pleased when I had in my hands some beautiful, dreamy photos. That was the moment I fell in love with the Diana camera and Lomography. With my ever growing collection of cameras, I see no reason to go back to digital photography as I love how unpredictable analogue cameras can be.

I went on to try more multiple exposures, which the Diana Mini does beautifully. The question is, with so much choice and so many options – where do I go next?

Storytelling with Petzvals: Alex Timmermans and the Art of Collodion

Not long after Alex Timmermans purchased his first digital camera at the turn of the century, he quickly realized the trappings of digital photography couldn't fulfill his personal photographic desires. He then began searching for a more challenging process — one that wasn't so predictable. His journey eventually landed him back at the roots of analogue photography, specifically employing the wet plate collodion process using original Petzval lenses. This antique photographic process found in him a renewed inspiration and has since become his passion, which is evident in both his words and his images.
