Ice Skating My Heart Out

3

I have never done ice skating in my life but I did not dare try while in Seoul for fear I might break my bones. I could imagine the case would spoil the fun of seeing much of this lovely city in so short a time. The thought of limping with a broken leg on a cold winter day gave me the creeps. I contented myself with watching skaters of all ages glide their way happily through the white, solid icy ground.

In front of the Seoul City Hall, which at the time of my visit was still under construction is a huge plaza. On other seasons, a magnificent fountain becomes a focal attraction in the site but during winter it is converted into an ice skating rink.

When fangcarpenter and I visited the area we saw a huge number of people – young and old – lining up to get to the rink when it opened at 10am. We immediately brought our cameras out of our bags. When the signal was given to open the rink for skaters, excitement was around as skaters conquered the huge white space of ice. The 2450 square meters of space that is the Seoul Square Ice Skating Rink houses three different skating rinks – large, medium, and small – plus a sledding hill. On the side of the rink, I met an eccentric retired athlete who ran the marathon in the Seoul 1988 Olympics. He was playing his hula hoops on both his neck and hips with ease and comfort as he even posed before my camera.

Day or night, the rink that is wonderfully located and accessible to lots of nearby tourist attractions like the Deoksugung Palace provides a fascinating view of Seoul’s skyline. It was such a visual delight seeing so many happy people around. Skating hours run from 10:00 -22:00 Mondays through Thursdays and Sundays, and up to 23:00 on other days and holidays.
