Imagine walking in silence and solitude, along the rocky coast and the Mediterranean wild bush vegetation, while flocks of sea gulls fly above your head, accompanied only by the tranquil undertones of the sea!
Giannutri is nicknamed the island of sea gulls because the sea gulls remain on the island during the winter season, and nest in spring before departing during the month of July. It is very emotional to have the opportunity to watch hundreds and hundreds of nests with sea gulls that try to attack you when you come too close.
The size of the island is very small (500m large and more or less 5kms long) and it is possible to walk around the entire island in few hours. Anyway I advice you to stay there three days. Giannutri is private property, there are no hotels and camping is prohibited.
In this environment that is so different than the norm, everyone is requested to respect the natural ambient in a very scrupulous manner. Giannutri is equivalent to a national park, so therefore it is severely prohibited to ignite fires, throw garbage or wastes, collect or pick flowers or plants, disturb or kill wildlife, create any form of disturbance of the peace. it is prohibited to anchor motor boats, or yachts along the major part of the coast.
The sea around Giannutri is one of the best places for scuba diving in the Mediterranean Sea. The coast is rocky everywhere and the water is very deep in certain areas, with the exception of two tiny sandy shores: Cala Maestra and Cala Spalmatoio. The walk towards the lighthouse is the most varied form the point of view of the panorama along the walk step by step as you walk towards “Punta di Capel Rosso”.
Along the path there are thick areas of typical Mediterranean vegetation on both sides, with the perfumed smell of wild rosemary shrubs, myrtle, and still others. The cliffs are very beautiful, 100 metres high, projecting rocks that come out of the sea with a spectacular view. On the other side there is Punta an Francesco the old runa for small planes but now from there just seagulls take flight. The village is nothing special it seems a big residence. So escape the village enjoy nature…
