Light Leaks with the LomoKino

3

What else can you do with the LomoKino? What other tricks can you experiment with for the movie maker of Lomography? Light leaks? Sure, why not?

Light Leaks. Interesting effect for a LomoKino film, don’t you think? I had to try it! So the first thing I did was ask help from horaciorv. We started working on the idea of our movie for LomoKino with Light Leaks.

We decided to create a history about two worlds, one real and the other dreamy, where the light leaks could appear and move us to fantastic situations.

For the real world we decided to record with a color negative film, Lomography CN 400. This film offers you true colors and tones and a great definition. These qualities, without any alteration, would help us tell this part of the story.

Some frames with Lomography CN 400

For the dream world, we chose a slide film, Lomography X-pro Chrome 100. When we developed it with cross-processing the colors will alter and saturate, these combined with light leaks, would give an an unreal feeling to the dreamy scenes of the story.

How to get light Leaks in your LomoKino Movie

First, we try to modify the camera so more light can enter while we are filming. Nothing seemed to work, so we decided to apply an old trick I do on the 120mm exposed film, in a non-exposed 35mm fim.

  1. I cut a strip of cardboard about 20 cm. long (approx.) and the exact width of 35mm film. And another short strip, about 7 cm. long of the same width.
  2. I got into a dark room (bathroom) with the roll of film and the strips of cardboard.
  3. Once in the darkroom, I took the whole movie out of the canister.
  4. Then I rolled the whole movie out of the canister. Then it was a roll of film and at the far end an empty canister was attached.
  5. I covered the long strip of cardboard with the final piece of the roll of film, the one with the canister at the end. Inside the roll, I put the small strip so the light would not expose directly to the film. What I did was try to emulate the protection on 120mm films.
  6. I left the dark room, went to a normal daylight room and started to push my roll to let the light get inside the film irregularly for different areas. Even stretch the spiral roll. Mind you, I didn’t fully unroll, simply pull out a little from the inside, one side to another.
  7. Then I went back to the darkroom to get the film back into the canister, leaving out the tab to load it into the LomoKino! As if nothing had happened.

Some photos to explain:

Horaciorv and me present you “Un sueño Caprichoso” (A Whimsical Dream), a movie filmed in 35mm with LomoKino and light leaks:

We hope you enjoyed!

So here’s what we’ve been working on: an all new lomography.com

For the last year we've been working on the next version of Lomography. We based our work on the feedback you’ve given us over the years and we wanted to share it as early as possible with you and can’t wait to hear what you think. Just one warning first: it is still in development and things can break. All the photos, comments, likes, homes and everything else were transferred as of October 16th, 2014. So anything you do on next.lomography.com won't be reflected on www.lomography.com and vice versa. Once we are done with testing, everything you did here will be deleted again. So this is a big playground for you to explore.

Unfortunately, it happens sometimes that your resulting pictures are not what you expected - the image doesn't look that good, the colors are bland, and the subject is banal. Indeed, it couldn't be picture of the year! Herein I propose a second chance for your pictures by modifying your 35mm negatives. Just pick up some ideas from here, experiment, and scan your negatives with the Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Anything is possible: burning, scratching, putting on hydrochloric acid, balsamic vinegar, nail polish, bleach, or raspberry juice... use your imagination and write down your new film soup recipe! You can find a sample of the effects in this article.
