Hoorayzon: The Horizon Kompakt Fling

1

I borrowed halfwakehaiku's Horizon Kompakt for a Lomo wedding shoot and was able to to use it for a couple of weeks. It was short, but nonetheless a memorable relationship.

Horizon Kompakt, as most of you already know, is a swing-lens camera for 135 films that captures 120 degrees view of the subjects in front of you.

I got it without manual. I had a hard time loading a film for the first few rolls, though it has a guide if you open the back cover. I’m just not used to reading and following guides properly.

And since the films were not loaded properly I got some wobbly and blurry panoramic shots. You could see in the full scans that the exposed area of the film is not straight.

I only realized that after seeing the scans when the films were developed. Of course, that did not prevent me from doing the same “mistake.” The camera has two shutter speed settings. The Day setting has 1/60 of speed, and combined with its f8 aperture it is enough to get a good panoramic shot with ASA100 and 200 films.

And for indoor or night shoot, you can use its Night Shutter setting with 1/2second shutter speed. You can handhold your Kompakt and still get a sharp photograph, just hold the camera firmly while the lens is panning.

I now own a Horizon Perfekt, but I always miss how easy it was to shoot multiple exposures with the Kompakt. You can cock it again to shoot in the same frame and see a nice overlaying shot!

I had a short-lived relationship with a friend’s Horizon Kompakt, but I will always treasure the memories including its noisy slow shutter panning!

The Horizon Kompakt makes it easy for everyone to shoot fantastic panoramic images. With fixed focus and aperture settings, all you have to do is point and shoot! Get your own Horizon Kompakt now!

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.

One of the things that make a trip to a far-flung place truly memorable is getting the chance to interact with the locals and share fun moments with them. Five years ago, disdis was able to do exactly that on a trip to Zinguinchor, Senegal, and it goes without saying that it was most certainly one for the books.

A Salute to the Masters: Ice Skating (A Tribute to Monte Fresco)

This article is dedicated to one of the finest British sport photographers, Monte Fresco. In his 30 years of reportage for the Daily Mirror, he took some of the most iconic photographs in sporting history. He covered football, tennis, and boxing. But it is his ice skating pictures that I am most fascinated with. Using my own lens, I give him a modern tribute.

A Salute to the Masters: R.I.P. (A Tribute to George Krause)

This article is dedicated to the multifaceted American photographer George Krause and to his series depicting funeral monuments realized between 1962 and 1963. I was able to know about this series thanks to an important essay on photography written by former Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Director of Photography, John Szarkowski. For this tribute, I loaded my trusty Praktica camera with a roll of Ilford film and took a series of photos in the Monumental Cemetery in my city, Como. Take a look!

Burkina Faso is a country that has three different climatic areas. It's mostly a land of the Sahel, very dry but with some vegetation and a short rainy season. The very south of the country is already in the tropical zone but the north still belongs to the Sahara desert. I had the opportunity to visit this area and witness a magical moment: a sunrise in the desert.
