Enjoying Classical Music Performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra

2

This free lunchtime concert made busy working professionals pause for a moment to enjoy the finer things in life.

To me, music is one of the greatest inventions by mankind. It can evoke emotions from excitement, joy, happiness to fear and suspense. Don’t believe me? Just watch your favorite movie and listen to how music adds drama to the scenes. After all, music has been one of the most common and important aspects of all cultures across the world as part of their storytelling heritage.

Recognizing that music is best appreciated in person, the Deutsche Bank in Singapore announced that they will be sponsoring four free lunchtime concerts to be performed by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) in 2012.

According to a SCO press release, Deutsche Bank’s collaboration with SCO was not just to celebrate the bank’s 40th anniversary in Singapore, the sponsorship was also in line with the Bank’s commitment to the arts. The Bank believes that this initiative will broaden its audience base in Singapore.

The first concert was held on 19 January 2012 at Deustche Bank Singapore’s office building lobby. But that’s not all that the Bank did. For this event, they also invited senior citizens from a day care centre as their special guests-of-honor.

According to the schedule, there were two 30-minute performances, one at noon and the other at 12.50pm. I missed the first performance but managed to catch the second one. Not surprisingly, a small crowd had already gathered at the location.

Luckily, I was able to blend in with the professional photographers and found a few vantage spots to snap a couple of photos of the concert.

But I had to be mindful and not get in the way of the professional photographers.

Not getting in the way of the pro photogs

However, as the crowd size swelled the relatively spacious foyer became cramped. As such, I could not take more unobstructed photos.

So I simply put down my camera and listened to the wonderful music that was being played. It’s a simple gesture by Deutsche Bank that may not bring in any financial gains for the bank, but looking at the crowd, this is one gesture that is appreciated by many working professionals – especially for fans of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

Gilbert Blecken Captures Iconic Musicians on Film

Back in the 1990s, Gilbert Blecken was a big music fan who wrote for his own small music fanzine. He would interview bands in between sound checks and photograph them. He never became a professional photographer or worked for a company; he simply did it for his fanzine. Twenty years after, Gilbert’s photographs have matured into an amazing documentation of some of the biggest music icons of that era. We caught up with Gilbert to ask him about these photographs and the fascinating story behind them.

Testing a Yashica TLR Camera After 55 Years in Storage

Though I am not a professional, photography is in my genes. My father was a photographer and technician in the Air Force and accumulated a number of cameras during his life. This is a story about one of those cameras, a Yashica 635 TLR. I brought the camera—after being in storage for about 55 years—back to life with a roll of Portra 160 during the golden hour at Bellevue Botanical Gardens in Washington.

    Analog By Nature

It's late October in Copenhagen and summer was well and truly behind us. With the nights drawing in, the chances of going out with one of my cameras was slim. All was not lost at this time of year, however, as it allowed me time to focus on my own personal music projects—I am a professional composer/musician and audio engineer at my own studio by day.
