Despite being relatively new, no typical grass, up in the air, and in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world, the Highline is probably my favourite patch of greenery. Read on to see what makes this place so special, and even though it is probably not the first place you'd think of when you think of greenery, it is definitely not to be missed!
Last year, on a planned holiday to South Florida, we decided to squeeze in a whistle-stop trip to New York, two days at the beginning of the holiday, a place I love and have enjoyed each time I have been. I will admit that a reason we went was to take advantage of the shops and the exchange rate, one of the main reasons was to go and visit the Highline, a place which hadn’t opened the last time we visited, and I can tell you it doesn’t disappoint.
Okay, so there might not be that much typical greenery in terms of grass, but they have a wide variety of plants that are happy to grow up there. It is a lovely space to sit and take in the surroundings, forgetting you are in New York, and I think it can rival an ordinary park anytime.
What I think amazes me most is how quiet it is, it might be on the edge of Manhattan, but it is still a hustling and bustling city, and yet it is so quiet and peaceful up there. Dotted along are benches to sit down and relax n, and even a long part of it, there are loungers to lie on. Water runs through certain parts as well. And with the height of the park, you get all the views of the city but yet feel nowhere near the big buildings, and yet they interject really well, and feels like it has been there functioning as a park the whole time.
Unfortunately, we didn’t time our trip very well, as a couple of days after we left, the second stage opened, we’ll have to save that for another trip if we are lucky enough to visit again. I would love to be able to spend more time on the Highline and would recommend spending some time up there if you are visiting New York anytime soon.
