Doubles with Light Painting

This is a very simple tipster that combines two of the funniest things in photography: Light Painting and Double Exposures.

When I first did light painting, I got a bit addicted to it. This is one of the ideas I had when I was always trying to think of cool things to do with it. The most important thing you will need is a camera that allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you wish, and make multiple exposures. I used my Lubitel 1.

You will also need a torch to make the light painting/writing and a tripod or a place where to put the camera steady. I don’t have a tripod for my Lubitel so I use the furniture, books, etc.. I use a cable release but it is not crucial, although handy.

Light painting is something I find fascinating and it is really easy to do. You just have to be in a very dark place with no lights on, set the camera to b-mode, press the shutter button and go to the front of the camera with the torch in your hand. Turn it on and use it like a pen – write or draw whatever you want and don’t forget to do it backwards!

When you do light painting, you have to stand in front of the camera. But what if you want to do it somewhere you can’t be, for example, the sky? You have to double it. So I decided to double the view from my veranda at night with some light writing and draws. I first took a long exposure of the view and then a second exposure with the light painting over it, using my torch that has also a red laser.

I still have a lot to practice but I think this is a cool idea to explore! I wonder if it works with one daylight exposure… has anyone ever tried something like this?
