There are some photos which we love despite the fact that we do not really know why. They usually give us such strange feeling which triggers some of our childhood memories.
“Punctum – it is an element of photography, which rises from the scene, shoots out of it like an arrow and pierces me.”
(A citation from Camera Lucida written by Roland Barthes, p. 26)
Some photos, whether taken by us or by someone else, have such power that we love them immediately. They are like a storm. They trigger almost forgotten memories or materialize our wishes and desires which we used to have as small and always daydreaming children.
When I was a child, my mum used to take me for a walk before lunch. I was a picky eater and my mum had to argue with me quite a lot about food. Her trick was quite simple. She knew that I loved dogs so she took me for a “before-lunch-walk” with some cookies in her pocket, some for me and some for dogs. We had our favourite spots and streets with family houses and favourite doggies hanging around in the gardens. There were three friendly dogs, which we always had to visit, give them some snacks and pet them a bit. My favourite and the hungriest dog I’ve ever met was Dalmatian called Fru-fru. With all his black speckles, he was like a phantom, especially in winter when everything was covered in snow.
Although houses are now occupied by some other families and some other dogs, you can still find some curious doggy faces there, pushing their little noses through the fence and trying to get some snacks or some scratching by the ear. When I took this photo, it immediately punctuated me, pierced me. It was like a sudden déjà vu. Even if it is not my best photo, it is the photo which makes my memories and childhood stories so alive. When I look at it, I am still a little girl dreaming about her own dog.
