Playing With Light: Tokihiro Sato

Light paintings and long exposures remain to be favorite techniques of Lomographers and film photographers, utilizing light to create interesting images. Internationally-acclaimed Tokihiro Sato has been doing just that--playing with light to capture photographs that are dreamy, compelling, and extraordinary.

For years, esteemed Japanese photographer Tokihiro Sato has been taking beautiful black and white photographs in extended exposures using a large format camera equipped with a darkening filter. A lot of photographers have already done this, I hear you say, but what sets his work apart is his creative process. To take a photo, he uses light to create playfully imaginative images.

During daytime, he walks around with a mirror in hand, flashing reflected sunlight towards the camera in intervals. At night, he roams around his chosen landscapes with a flashlight, beaming it towards the camera periodically to embed points of light on the image. This would sometimes require exposure times of one to three hours, with the resulting images taking viewers to worlds that are more like dreams, where fairies instead of fireflies frolic and hop around the camera.

Sato’s works have been published in a number of books, the most recent being Photo Respiration published in 2005. Unfortunately, it has gone out of print, and existing copies are priced at $100 upwards. He has also been showcasing his works in numerous exhibits around the world since the early 1980’s, most recently in Tennessee, New York, and San Francisco.
