Our Very Own Cardboard Christmas Tree

2

Christmas is a very special time of year, and this year we wanted to make something different at home, something creative, even analogue, that’s why we decided to make a cardboard Christmas tree for our flat!

The truth is, making a cardboard tree is much more simpler than I thought, but you do need a bit of patience. You’ll see that at the end you’ll have fun and you’ll be able to spend a nice time with your loved ones.

These are the materials you need:

  • Pencil
  • 2 big cardboard pieces (1.20 meters approximately)
  • Paper cutter
  • Ruler
  • Christmas lights

Before you start, I suggest you make a smaller version of your tree on a piece of paper so you get the hang of it before you do it on a big scale. Once you’re happy with your design, the first step is to take one of the cardboard pieces and draw on it your Christmas tree. This is where the ruler comes in really handy, especially to draw straight lines and measure the distances between the branches to make it as similar as possible.

When you have drawn the whole tree, it’s time to start cutting it. Carefully follow the line (please do mind your fingers) and on a flat surface use the paper cutter to cut out the tree. Now that you have one side of the Christmas tree, use this as a pattern to draw a second one on the other piece of cardboard. That way you’ll make sure you have two matching trees.

With both trees cut out, place the one on top of the other, here comes the tricky part, you have to make a mark at the middle of the tree. Using it as a starting point, on one tree you have to cut from the middle to the base of the tree and on the other one, from the middle to the top of the tree. These incisions will allow the tree to assemble and stand by itself. Finally, when you have your tree ready and standing up by itself, use those Christmas lights to decorate it!

If you have any more ideas on any analogue Christmas decorations please leave a comment below.

    Registering Moments With the Lomo'Instant

Some people say instant photos bring about a feeling of nostalgia. Although I often use the Lomo'Instant Camera with different crazy accessories such as the Splitzer and color gels, I have to agree there is something about it — dreamy vignettes maybe? — that always makes me want to go back in time and experience it all over again. In the name of analogue photography and good old memories, we passed by some classic spots in Vienna and took one shot after the other. Take a closer look at our gallery.

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.
