Small City, Big Possibilities!

7

It's awesome to read about ongoing events in the big analogue world, but what if you live in a small city and have to go solo? This tipster is for all you lone rangers out there: get creative with your surroundings and make some Lomo magic!

We all know the feeling of “What an awesome LomoWall/Gallery opening/workshop! I wish my town had a great Lomographic community!” Fret not, dear Lomographers, here are some tips for the lone rangers of the world. I live in a small city in the southern United States, and it can be kinda tricky finding new things to capture on film, so I’ve had to come up with some mantras to stay inspired.

1. Keep Your Eyes Open: Hidden in any town, big or small, there are precious gems just waiting to be photographed, you just have to watch out for them! Little alleyways, cracks in the pavement, and secret hideaways are all over the place! Slip your lens cap into a pocket while you’re out and about so your “third eye” is never blind!

2. Multiples, Multiples, Multiples: I’ve often looked at my photographs and thought, “That was such a cool subject, I wish I had taken more photos of it.” Trying different angles, getting close, and playing with your camera’s settings such as focus and shutter speed are great, no-fail ways to stretch the possibilities and really work with your surroundings! I’ve found I also enjoy looking at photo galleries that display multiple ways to photograph a subject or a location, so your viewers might like that as well!

3. Find Willing Victims: Pets and family members are champions at this! You can catch them doing the craziest things at home or out and about, and they usually don’t mind if you stick a camera in their faces (be sure to ask nicely the first time, and they will never fail you). Street performers are always good, especially if you toss a few coins in their guitar case to say thanks!

4. DIY To The Max! Simple tipsters and modifications such as homemade redscale film or unique paper masks) instantly make the most humdrum subjects burst with personality.

5. Ear To The Ground: Pay attention to when and where some unique event or experiment is taking place, and get your paparazzi on! Once-in-a-lifetime photo ops happen every day. I took the following photographs of some friends experimenting with silicone scar makeup… creepy!

Keep in mind that your own imagination is the limit of what you and your camera can do. Think of new challenges for yourself and write them down or save them in your phone or computer. What are your best tricks for the most interesting photographs? Stay plastic, stay fantastic!

And that is why I sought out the people who make Denver that much more interesting after the initial period of settling down. My search lead to a few establishments that have contributed to making Denver what it is today. In the second story on Transient Living, I present to you two of such establishments: The Craftsman & Apprentice, and A Small Print Shop.

Lomography Day Trips: Lisbon, The City of Yellow Trams

I divide people who travel to Portugal into two groups: those who prefer Porto and those who like Lisbon better. I love Porto, it's a little gem, but if I ever lived in Portugal I'd choose Lisbon in a heartbeat. It's got everything big cities have while staying beautiful and romantic and the same time.

Lomography Day Trips: Wandering Around in Lively Leuven

Leuven is a typical Belgian university city that is full of students, but feels a bit like a ghost city when all the students go home for the weekend. Nevertheless, this is the perfect time to pay a visit to this beautiful historic city just right next to Brussels. If you like culture, cobblestoned streets, creativity, and Belgian beers, this is your perfect day trip!
