Three Quick Tips for a White Christmas

2

We associate the holiday's with cold weather and of course, lots of snow! Here are a few tips to help you capture a white Christmas!

For those of us in many parts of the world, snow surrounds us this time of year. Sure it can be tough to shoot sometimes, but it also offers some amazing photographic opportunities.

First, I would offer that snow is an amazing backdrop. Just plop anyone down in the snow and you have an instant bright white background that gives a high key look without any effort. Snow also has the effect of reflecting light back up towards people, which fills in shadows underneath the eyes and nose. On an overcast day, this acts as a natural “beauty light” without any extra equipment.

Second, if you want your snow to be bright white, it’s important to overexpose. The brightness of the snow will trick your camera’s meter into underexposing the film, so take charge and lower that ISO setting. For example, on an LC-A+, you might want to expose ISO 200 film at ISO 100 so that your snow comes out nice and white. In this photo with my Horizon Perfekt, I used a hand held meter and then overexposed by one stop by slowing the shutter speed a little:

Third, snow is a great palette for other colors. All those great color shifts from XPRO and redscale films will be displayed in all their glory by a nice white patch of snow.

So go out and act like a kid… just find some snow!

The Lomography Redscale XR 50-200 35mm gives you full control over your redscale images. With its extended ISO range, you can pick an effect that you want and set the ISO accordingly. Your images will exude a lovely retro feel. See our selection of Lomography films here.

Hey, Great article just one question though. I have a Diana Mini and instead of numbers for ISO they have 2 settings. Cloudy and Sunny. Can you tell me what they're equilivant to if you know?
    Many Thanks :D

I especially love your first of 8 photo. Stunning! Good tip about over-exposing. I wished I'd thought of it yesterday when I took half a roll of snowy pics...

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.
