By the Decade: Toys From the 1960's

On this next edition of toys by the decade, we'll be taking a look at some of the toys that were released in the 1960's including the Easy Bake Oven, G.I. Joe and more.

Easy Bake Oven
The Easy Bake Oven is a toy oven where kids can cook their own cakes. It was first introduced in 1963 by the toy company, Kenner Products. The first edition of the Easy Bake Oven came with an incandescent light bulb that was used as a heat source. This made sure that the toy was safe for children to use. The Easy Bake Oven comes with small packs of cake mix and a few round pans that can be used for baking.

G.I. Joe
This was probably one of the most popular toys for boys in the 1960’s. The G.I. Joe action figure was introduced by the toy company Hasbro. The original line of G.I. Joe was released in 1964 and represented the different sectors of the armed forces including an action soldier, action nurse, action marine, action pilot and action sailor. The G.I. in G.I. Joe pertains to ‘Government Issued’.

Hot Wheels
Hot Wheels was released by the toy company Mattel in 1968. These toy models were designed in order to be used with the Hot Wheels tracks that the company also manufactures. The 16 car models that were initially released include a Camaro, Firebird, Mustang, Cougar, a Corvette and eleven others. To this day, Hot Wheels still remain as one of the best toys to give little boys.

Operation
This hand-eye coordination game was released in 1965. The idea is to remove the affected parts of the patient with the use of tweezers. If the player hits the metal edges while removing the affected part, a buzzer goes off. This toy proved to be successful as they still come out with different editions until this day.

The Game of Life
The Game of Life is a board game that invented by Milton Bradley in 1860. However, the game wasn’t released until 1960. The game is a simulation of real life events — from attending school to starting a family. Initially, the game was made for 2 to 6 players but there were other versions released to accommodate up to 10 players. Like some of the toys on this list, The Game of Life is still in production to this day.

These are some of the toys that were released in the 1960’s. Do you remember some of the toys that you got for Christmas? Share your thoughts with a comment below!

Mysterious apparitions and other inexplicable phenomena on film, or generally speaking, for that matter, are as highly debated topics today as they were many decades ago. In 1934, a certain Mr. C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield held a lecture at 76 Clarkehouse Road located in the same city to "demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography" before an invited committee. MacCarthy's demonstration was accompanied by a series of photographs titled "Psychic Photography From a New Angle."
