LomoAmigo Moushumi Ghosh Weaves Dreams with the Diana Mini

Author, poet, blogger and philosopher! Moushumi is everyone of those and then she's also a Lomographer. Her love for film comes from a deep rooted love for anticipation, romance and taste for refinement. She has been shooting with the Diana Mini for some time now and tells us about her experiences with it.

Name: Moushumi Ghosh
Age: 34
Location: Chennai, India
Occupation: Instructional Designer (by designation) Awesome Designer (by profession)

So what attracts you to Lomography?
The vivid color, the spontaneity, the unpredictability that almost each Lomographic picture radiates.

Why analogue?
I have been thinking about this much before you asked me this question. It’s a mix of many things. A nostalgia for a simpler time. You know, a certain innocence that I think we have lost en route to some unknown destination that we are hurrying to. Analog tells me to stop and makes me observe the world far more intensely. Also, there is something so solid, so reassuring about holding photographs and negatives in my hands.

What made you get the idea to create a visual diary fusing literature with Diana Mini pictures?
My strength is that I know something about the world of words. And pictures are my weakness. Putting them together seemed like a logical and good idea.

What inspires you?
Any insight into ourselves or about this world. It could come from predictable or unlikely sources. It could be a quote, a picture, a comment, a book, or incident. But if it makes me think, that’s inspirational. Every time I find this inspiration, I feel like my world has expanded a bit. That’s another thing about Lomography I like. It’s expanded my world. More than just a bit.

What book are you reading right now? Is there a quote in it which makes you get up and go out shooting?
I am reading Colm Tóibín’s Brooklyn right now among other books. It’s a novel about finding one’s own place in the world. There is a phrase in the book – I hope this counts as a quote – ‘a sort of happiness’. It’s quite revealing of the book and of life in general as well. ‘A sort of happiness’ would be something approximating contentment, which is quite rare to find. This makes me want to pursue the things that bring me my own ‘sort of happiness’ including going out for shooting.

What is the best part you like about Diana Mini?
It always surprises me! I don’t know what to expect when I shoot with the Mini. It’s a complete free fall that I want to go on again and again.

One book which you’d want to be in with your Diana Mini?
I would love to visit Gabriel Garcia’s Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude with the Diana Mini. The magic-realist landscape so perfectly matches the Diana Mini. Unreal fantastic things happen all the time in the book. There is nothing better than a magical camera to record it!

Moushumi also runs a Blog called The South West Sun which features amazing notes on books and her notes on the Diana Mini too! Check it out!!
