We'd like to introduce Ximena, a rising singer songwriter and actress from the beautiful country of Mexico! Her critically acclaimed debut album has given her stardom and we can only expect more! Check out her gallery and interview after the jump!
Please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do.
I am a singer songwriter from Mexico City. I am currently promoting and touring my first english language record that just came out in August. I am also an actress and have been in many mexican films.
Is this your first time shooting with a Lomography camera. How is it?
This was my first experience with a Lomography camera. I was pretty amazed at the quality of the photographs for such an accessible camera. It took me a while to get the hang of it, especially since I am so used to digital now and the immediacy of the results, but it was kind of exciting to not know what you were going to get until you get the film back from the studio.
What do you like taking pictures of and why?
I like to try and capture the general vibe of what’s going on around me. The people, the landscape, even the slightest detail is important. I like to remember and recreate the feeling of places.
Describe the Sprocket Rocket camera in 5 words.
complex, outdoorsy, surprising, vintage, movement.
How did you get started in show business?
I have been in “show business” for as long as I can remember. My parents are both filmmakers and I started acting when I was 4. I was oblivious to the concept of show business as such. Show business saw me grow up.
As a musician, who are your influences?
Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Bjork, Radiohead, John Lennon, Fiona Apple, Caetano Veloso, Natalia Lafourcade, and Jorge Drexler.
How about as an actress?
I think the two people that inspire me the most and have shaped the way I think about acting are both my parents. My dad (Fernando Sariñana) has given me the director’s point of view of acting, and my mom (Carolina Rivera) the screenwriter’s view, allowing me to think of the actor as another piece in the puzzle of transmitting the message of the most important thing: the story.
If you could take your camera and a sack of film anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
I would go to Oaxaca, Mexico. The markets there are unbelievable, filled with amazing spices, moles, and the most colourful arts and crafts you will find. There is so much history and so much stuff going on. Extra treat to go during Day of The Dead weekend when the whole city fills up with altars and orange cempasúchil flowers.
Tell us the most unforgettable, strangest, funniest, or worst photographic/Lomographic encounter you have ever had.
Would have loved to have my sprocket rocket at the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City. We played for over 40 thousand people and the view was just amazing. I’m sure I could have gotten amazing footage there.
If your life had a soundtrack, what are the top 3 songs and why? (artist and song title please!)
Isolation-John Lennon: one of my favorite songs in the whole world. Just takes me back to a very personal place. good for when I need to remember myself.
No Me Cumbe- Nicomedes Santa Cruz: a Peruvian folk song that my dad used to sing to me when I was young and it’s one of the first memories I have related to music. Latin American folk songs are so filled with personality. They remind me of home.
Bizness- Tune-Yards: I’m always looking for new music to keep me inspired. Merryl Garbus from Tune-Yards is an amazing and empowering performer and musician. This song has the energy and soul I strive to live my life with.
Tell us something about you’ve been doing lately, like your latest project.
I am currently on tour promoting my record that just came out, which will be my project for what’s left of this year and the first half of the next!
