Diwali on the Square, London

Diwali Festival is one of the most important events in the Hindu calendar, but is also celebrated by several other of the world’s religions. This year saw London’s celebration begin in the glorious October sunshine in Trafalgar Square.

Diwali has always been one of my favourite times of the year as it is “the festival of lights” so usually involves bright colours, fireworks, and lots and lots of lighting in towns and cities across the UK. I was in London a couple of weeks ago when the UK was enjoying some amazing autumn sunshine so we headed down to “Diwali on the Square” to see the festivities for ourselves.

Trafalgar Square in the sun made a perfect backdrop for this festival.

Unfortunately for my friend and I, we arrived quite late in the afternoon and missed the free saris and yummy vegetarian foods that had been present earlier in the day, but there was still plenty going on to see, and photograph when we got there.

The main stage was constantly full of amazing dancers from all over London and the UK dressed in beautiful outfits. The music was fun to listen to and the dancers were great to watch. Fortunately, due to the great layout and size of the square, we managed to find a place where we could sit down and still have a perfect view of the entertainment.

More importantly, there were a number of stalls promoting important charities and other events, such as encouraging people from ethnic minority groups in the UK to be organ and blood donors. This is a really crucial movement as statistically, less than 1% of donors come from minority groups and often this means less matches for those who need it. There were some other great causes there too, such as this guy who was kind enough to let me take his photo.:-)
