Stay a good week in Phuket and realize that even that is not enough! Explore its countless beaches, go all out in Bangla, meet the Buddha, surf if you are lucky, catch the stunt show, shop til you drop…. And the list goes on.
Phuket felt a lot like my home island, Bali. It is rural yet developed, local yet touristy. It is one of the major tourist destinations in Thailand as it has its own airport with many international flights going in and out. We arrived to Phuket by boat and stayed in Chalong Bay, which is a marina in the southern part of the island.
When you are here, make sure to have some form of private transportation, as the island is quite massive to explore! We hired a motorbike to do the job and for sure we had a day where our tire ran flat. But hey, it’s all part of the experience!
Phuket has many beaches to choose from, plenty of tasty street food, endless forms of entertainment and the biggest sitting Buddha in the world! The Buddha can be seen from many parts of the island, sitting on top of the hill. We made our way up there and this marble Buddha was marvelous, though still under heavy construction. One day we also visited the Elephant temple – these cute giants are revered here and have their own road signs too! Yes that’s right, elephants do cross the roads in Phuket!
If you are seeking nightlife, shopping, and congestion then Pathong is the perfect place to be. This strip of beach is always crowded and its main street packed with shops, bars, clubs and even has your local Burger King and McDonald’s (not that you’re interested, hopefully).
Soi Bangla is the Khao San Road of Phuket and here we couldn’t help but catch the infamous ping-pong show. And I’m not going to elaborate on that.
Thing is, Phuket has something for everyone; whether you are young or old, innocent or wild, straight or the opposite…. It really doesn’t matter. It’s hard to not have fun here!
