High Park (Ontario)

Although you can go to High Park year-round, the best time to go is in spring to watch every plant, animal, and tree come out of hibernation and begin to grow in the warmth of the sunlight. The park is filled with green grass, tall twisted trees, hidden pathways, small creatures and animals, unique plants and flowers, huge hills and ravines, and a giant pond filled with fish.

There is a Cherry Blossom Festival in High Park during spring to commemorate the donation of 34 Sakura (or Cherry Blossom) trees from Japan to Canada in 2001. Japan donated the trees to Canada in hopes of promoting goodwill between the two countries. The Cherry Blossom Festival is an especially magical time when the cherry blossoms reach full bloom, fill the air with their sweet scent, and fall to the ground to line the paths through the park. Earlier this year, we gathered in High Park with a bunch of strangers to mingle, dance, and appreciate the beauty of the Cherry Blossom trees.

One night, some friends and I were intoxicated and we decided to visit High Park. There is a large playground area within the park and we thought that it would be fun to find it and play. We spent hours wandering through the park at night, in the middle of winter, searching endlessly for it.

Finally we met some people that were walking their dogs in the park, and they helped direct us to the playground. Even after being given specific directions, we still managed to get lost in the park. With every ounce of determination in our bodies, we kept walking with our eyes peeled until we finally found it. At this point, we ran for the slides and the swings, for the wooden playhouse and the jungle gym, and for the sake of being alive and having fun in the middle of the night in High Park.

High Park is the kind of place a photographer can go to with 5 rolls of film, expose every shot, and not even have the chance to take the same picture twice. You can walk around aimlessly, walk in circles, or get lost, and you will always find something new to look at and photograph. For an extra dose of fun, bring slide film and colored filters, and cross-process the results!

My wife and I suffered a family loss in October 2013 so we decided to shift things around and have a celebration of life—a wedding, actually—to associate our loss with the beginning of something positive and memorable. We have been together for nearly 13 years and after getting married, we headed off on a three-month trip to South America and a few other stops to complete a round-the-world loop back to Australia.

    Changing Seasons: Durham in Autumn

Durham is a beautiful but tiny university city in the north of England famous for its amazing cathedral, which is one of Britain's best loved buildings. When I was studying at the university, I loved to go for crisp, autumnal walks around the cathedral and the river, kicking the leaves and basking in the golden glow of the season. The Lomography Redscale film perfectly captures the beauty of this time of year.

Fourth of July Celebrations Throughout the Years

On July 4, 1776, the redrafted version of Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence made it to Congress. Some 90 years later it was made into an official holiday. Since then, Americans have celebrated Fourth of July in full regalia. Some parade in flag-themed costumes or party in their best dresses, while others bond with friends over beer in the park.

Transient Living: Getting to Know the Neighborhood in Denver, Colorado

Editor's Note: The past several years saw Maliha frequently moving from one place to another, a sort of nomad who likes the thrill of starting anew and finding her place in every city she stays at. In the last decade she has spent in the USA, Maliha has stayed at six different cities in five different states. Currently, Maliha is based in Denver, Colorado, and "Transient Living," a new series in the Lomography magazine, documents her experiences and the ways that she has come to call this city her home.
