Some of the creepiest photos I have taken this year, were taken just last weekend at Leeds Annual Zombie Prom, where local people, like myself get dressed up in fancy dresses, slather on the fake blood and hit Fab Cafe nightclub for an evening of food, music, entertainment and dancing.
Zombie Prom at Fab Cafe happens on the Saturday night after freshers week every year and it is marketed as “Leeds Alternative Fresher’s Fair”. I am not sure how many freshers actually attend however because it is a bit of a whacky concept and is held at a venue many people don’t discover until they have lived in Leeds a while. I love it, because I love Fab and I love zombies. Everyone here makes a real effort with their costume as well, none of this girls just glue on some bunny ears and wear no clothes malarky. No no no, the people at Fab, staff included, will be zombied up to the nines. So it’d be rude not to join them.
The music is fairly alternative, as it always is with Fab Cafe nights, but they do include a few classic zombie tunes (think Zombie by The Cranberries, Zombienation and White Lines by Grandmaster Flash from SOTD). The atmosphere is great, with fake blood (or maybe real, who knows?) sprayed everywhere and free snacks handed out by the pale faced Undead. There is also some great entertainment including burlesque dancing, a fire hula-hoop lady and a man who thinks he is a dragon.
So if you want to spend Freshers weekend away from the main drag, in a different place with different vibes, then zombie prom is definitely for you. You don’t have to dress up, but it feels like a whole different experience if you do.
