Decades in Space: 80’s Space Pictures

Take a look at some pictures from the 80’s as we celebrate Space Week.

Russia’s Buran Space Shuttle
The Buran space shuttle was an unmanned orbital space craft that was launched on November 15, 1988. It currently holds the record for the heaviest rocket that used liquid fuel. During its mission, it spent a total of 3 hours in space.

ESA’s First 3 Astronauts
ESA’s (European Astronaut Selection) first 3 astronauts are pictured above. From left to right they are Claude Nicollier, Wubbo Ockels and Ulf Merboid. Their missions started in the 1980’s and since then, other European countries also started their enlistment of astronauts.

NASA Galileo Probe
The NASA Galileo probe was an unmanned orbiter and fly-by spacecraft that was launched on October 18, 1989. The Galileo reached Jupiter in 1995. Its mission is to observe Jupiter and its moons.

First Ariane 4 Launch
The Ariane 4 was launched on June 15, 1988. It was a disposable launch system that was developed by the ESA. Out of 166 launches, 113 were successful, yielding to a 97% success rate. Because of this, the Ariane 4 Launch Team was given the Space Achievement Award back in 2004.

Sigmund Jaehn
Sigmund Jaehn was the very first German to go to space for the Intercosmos program. He spent almost 8 days in space and was given the title “Hero of the Soviet Union”.

    Solar Eclipses and Beyond

The skies were busy with magic today — or maybe it was just the solar eclipse that caused all that ruckus? Decked out in space-age goggles and other various sun viewing paraphernalia, groups of people gathered as the moon moved between the sun and the earth this morning across Europe. Only a few lucky folks witnessed the total eclipse, and here at Vienna HQ, the greatest moment of the partial eclipse happened at 10:45 A.M. and lasted only a few minutes. We stopped everything we were doing to join the sky watchers crew and share in this astonishing moment. Check out these brilliant solar-inspired shots to celebrate the occasion!
