Decades in Space: 70’s Space Pictures

Let’s take another look back at history as we celebrate Space Week. Take a look at some 70’s pictures after the jump.

Mariner 9
Mariner 9 was the very first spacecraft to orbit Mars. Its mission was to map 70% of Mars’ surface and also to study the changes within the planet. It took off on May 30, 1971 and circled Mars 2 times a day for 1 year.

Viking 1
Viking 1, a spacecraft from the Viking program, was the very first space capsule to land on Mars. Its orbiter mission lasted for 6 years and 116 days. One of its missions is to search for an indication of life on Mars. The Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975.

Voyager 1
The Voyager 1 is a flyby space probe that was launched in 1977. The picture above shows a close up of Jupiter taken by Voyager 1. To date, its mission is still ongoing and it will most likely be the first probe to leave the Galaxy.

Lunokhod 2
The Lonokhod 2 was an unmanned rover that was launched on January 15, 1973. Its mission was to take pictures of the moon’s surface, observe light levels and to perform several experiments.

Apollo 13 Crew
Shown on the photo above is the crew of Apollo 13. From left to right, they are Commander James Lovell Jr., Command Module Pilot John Swigert Jr. and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise Jr. The Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970. Its main objective was to discover the Fra Mauro, a geological formation at the side of the moon.

    Registering Moments With the Lomo'Instant

Some people say instant photos bring about a feeling of nostalgia. Although I often use the Lomo'Instant Camera with different crazy accessories such as the Splitzer and color gels, I have to agree there is something about it — dreamy vignettes maybe? — that always makes me want to go back in time and experience it all over again. In the name of analogue photography and good old memories, we passed by some classic spots in Vienna and took one shot after the other. Take a closer look at our gallery.
